'LEARNING
A DEADLY
HABIT
Mice and guinea pigs don't take
to smoking. But dogs can he
trained to inhale through im-
planted tubes.
Being man's best friend has its
liabilities.
Of 97 beagles trained to inhale
in a recent smoking expirement,
79 percent of the heavy smokers
(seven cigarettes a day) devel-
oped lung cancer. And virtually
all the heavy smokers showed
signs of emphysema.
The link between smoking an d
lung cancer has been indicated
clearly for years by statistical
evidence. But this is proof posi-
tive. Similarly, the association
between smoking and emphysema
has been suggested for some
time. The beagle experitne:It
confirmS a direct casual connec-
tion.
People choose to smoke volun•
tarily. Dogs do not. But people
— more and more of them - can
also chose to stop. The beagles
did not have this choice.
Kicking the habit is getting to
be a favourite American pastime.
21 million people in this country
have quit smoking. And it looks
as if over a million more will
kick the habit this year.
Christmas Seal associations
across the country are wile:-
ing a TICK THE HABIT Caln-
paign ror the entire month of
june. If you Still smoke, ask them
for two leaflets, ME QUIT
SMOKING WHYS and ME QUIT
SMOKING HOW? They Will also
have information about with-
drawal. programs and other anti-
Snicking actiVitieS.

The Scripture, Matthew 6,
5-15, was read by •Mrs. J, Clatk
after which hymn 559 was sung.
The topic Was given by Mrs, Ron
Bennett. She spoke on "Riot
which took place in the down
town area of Milwauke, Wiscon-
sin," This one particular. busin-
ess man had a newly retnodelled
store and how quickly in the
middle of the night it had been
shattered to ruin and made ai very
desolate spot by rioters. What a
feeling- it must he to have your
prize possessions, hopes and
drearns flattened within hours
after closing time. Yet this hap-
pens time and 'time again to in-
nocent ones, Why do these things
take place? What can we do to
prevent this? Where or whom do
we turn to for he3P? Like
