POISONS FROM MOLDS
TOXIC TO ANIMALS
111 19 0, more than .10(1,000

in. England died suddenly from
o mysterious disease. Thousands
of dneklings and young pheasants
were also affected. Simultan-

At the time, there was thought
to be little in connection bet‘veon
the two disasterS, but reSea yell to
trace the causes of the disease
was immediately' implemented.
Dr. J, C. Alexander, Department
Of Nut.riti011, University of
Guelph, said that a careful survey
Of early outbreaks of the poultry
disease showed they were aSsoe,
la sted with feeds produeed at two
London mills. The conimon in-
gredient, of the feeds was a Bra-
Man peanut meal, After much re-'
search it was found that the
poispn killing the turkeys was a
toxin of fungal .origin contained
in the nuts, Similiarly, it was de-
tertnined that the hatchery-bred
trout bad been fed dried nteal
which carried the same toxin,
This tangos, or mold, was iden-
tified as Aspergilins Flavus, and
the toxin. became known as aria-
toxin. In turkeys it eahsed loss of
appetite,. lethargy and weakness

drawn back, and the legs extend-

rhages, SWP011en kidneys and dead
body tissue were also present.
The trout diseases were also
feend to be caused by aflatoxin
poisoning.
