Litt AiN.11) MANGE IN PiGS
CONTROLLED BY SPRAYS
Lice and mange are the most
common external parasites in
pigs. Roth parasites pierce the
skin and, apart from causing in-
tense irritation. lead to a decrease
in pig performance.
Mr. J, G. Norrish, Swine Special-
is t, and Dr. P. G. Oliver. both of
the Ontario Department of Agricul-
ture and. Food, not that control
of these parasites is:lin-4de and
inexpensive. Lice are easily recog-
nized. and are found around the
ears, backs -and sides, of the affe.t-
ed animals. Lice suck blood
well as piercing the skin. Colima-
phos "Co-calt and Malathion, both
used as sprays, are registered for
the control of lice on pigs. liadane
may also be used as a spray for
this purpose
lierds free of virus, linen-
nionia and atrophic rhinitis are
free from mange. but it is found
in most conventional pig herds.
-Pigs that have mange will scratch
themseives constantly, the skin
will bec-nne reddened and scurfy,
and in advancd cases., very thick

"THE GOOD DRIVER"
THE ONT. SAFETY LEAGUE
Police pursuit of lawbreakers
driving at high speed raises dif-
fiCUIL problems. it means danger
for the public. as well as to those
involved. ;But it is scarcely real-
istic to insist that police should
always observe speed limits; it
would serve •notice on ear thieves
and other crimitials that all they
have to do to avoid apprehension
is to step on the gas. Roadblocks.
such as police cars parked across
the road. can sometimes be used
to stop fleeing cars; but 'this also
involves considerable danger.
The Pill 1..v' enforcement Bul-
letin. Nov. 3;4 69, describing, an
emergency roadblock which can
stop a ear travelling Si , miles an
hour in less. than ft. The Ont-
ario Safety League says the device
ctmsists of a net assembly strung
across the road. it is small enough
to be- carried in the trunk of a poi-.
ice .car. and causes little damage:
to the car being stopped, .The
device can also be used for var-
ions traffic control purposes,
Coroner `s :lures often nuike
recommendations which are (Jim-
ptetely imprac-tical. but not so in
this ea-.e reported by the Ontario .
Safety League.
A car crash in Britain which
killed the driver was attributed to
the vehicle having a combination
of cross-ply and radial-ply tires.
Bet.ause the driver may not have
k.nown that it is dangerous to mix
the two types. she coroner's Jury
recommended that all radial-ply
tires have the word "Radial"
marked clearly on the side's-ails.
All 1,%K. tire manufacturers are
modifying their molds to comply
with the recommendation.
Mt.,tor madnes - is a
phrase used by the Insurance
Bureau of Canada in describing
the irr-esponsible .driving that.
forcing companies to review their
claim costs continuously. Industry
figures quoted by the Ontario
Safety League show that in the
past four years the cost of ear
insurance has risen by about 10 67%.
By contras( in the same period
weekly wages have risen 30%, cost
of living 17 t/,%, doctors' fees /-

'chore is a great, need tar driv-
er training in the skills needed to
handle motorcycles, says the Ont-
ario Safety League. S. accident
records indicate that 70% or

rowed or rented motorr:yeles, and
2u‹.:;. of fatalities occurred to driv-
