(BLIND STUDENTS
IN UNIVERSITY
Three women and seven men
are blind university students from.
Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec,
who are taking part in an orient-
tation program sponsored by The
Canadian National Institute for
the Blind at the agency's Nat-
ional Office in Toronto.
Blind students have special
!problems that their sighted friends
do not have to Lace. A blind stint-
ent often feels lost on a large
campus and may be treated
strangely on a small one, This
progtiant will prepare these
students for campus life.
There are three parts to the
program, The first is, How to Do
It. Students ,leatin about getting
volunteer readers, the CNIB re-
cording services, a crash course
in a special Braille shorthand,
and advice Ott Writing exattin-
ations. 11,any blind students Write
their examinations With a Brail-
le typeWriter, or give them verb-
ally, Regardless of Method, it
takes a blirid student longer and
special arrangement innst be

SUMMER MONTHS
Every summer in Ontario,
drowning takes a high tell of lives,
13ut multiply the heartache and
tragedy of our drowning deaths
twice over and you'll. find a more
relentless summer killer —traffie
collisions.
Drowning deaths peak during
the summer months 01' ,Iune, July
and August. During a three year
period, 1.905-67, the average numb-
er of drowningS each summer was
208. Highway fatalities still de.-
counted for over twice as many
deaths, with an average of 454
dying during the three summer
inonths.
Over the span of a full year,
traffic colliSions Will kill five
times more people than drowning.
On the average, during the time
period :1965-67, 1,017 traliffie fatal-
Riese occurred in one year While
drowning deaths averaged 322,
Children within the age group
hp to 11 years have the highest
relative incident of drowning,
.The highest number of deaths
on the highway, the second high.,
est number of deaths by droVni•
iii occurs in the ',dangerous
teens" (15,19 years old) in this
three-year study.
