There were 1,586 traffic de•atItS
in Ontario in 1908, and 71,520 in-
Juries. Apart from presumed sui-
cides, and possibly a few murd-
ers. in each case the tragedy
arose from one or more vehicles
going ,'out of control”.
In some instances the loss of
control leading to a crash is uu•
avoidable, arising front a genuine
uprodietable "accident". But far
too often, says the Ontario Sate-
ty League, control of a car is lost
because it is being driven in a
way ths1 invites, or dares disaster.
Is it the ear or driver who is
"put of control"? la news reports
of smash-ups poor visibility and
slippery surflicos are often
"blamed". The plain fact is that
wet or icy roadways, mist or snow
have about es much to do with
these aecidents as do trees, win-
phone' posts and ditches into
whicli curs are hurled,
Most of the accidents blamed
on ''loss et control' ate not only
avoidable: thoyy have nothing to
do with "control" at all. hfere ate"
just a few instances:
, A driver who found he could
not stop at a corner because of
slippey pavement `'lout con-
trol" because he knowlingiy
drove at a higheP speed than
.driving conditions and his tiros
warranted.
A car whose driver failed to
make a curve on a high Way in
good conditions was not "out
of control". It was being driven
too fast,
A drives who plowed bite a
stalled car at night did not
"lose control". Tie was driving
beyond his, headlights",
A reat-end cellisioil was not the
result of "less of control", It
oe-eutTed because the tat! gating
driver drove too close to the ear
ahead, or did not Watch for Wtake
