NARROW CORN ROWS
DON'T RAISE YIELDS
"We now have enough experi•
mentni evidence to show con.
.elusively that changing In 18-inch•
wide rows [rim.) the conventional
36-inehrows, will result in only a
small increase in Yield. In fact
in. sonic cases titer may he no inj
cress at all." Mr. 11... .13...Hunter of
the. Crop Science .fleparl m en I,
University of anelph, made this
statem tre een t Iy after coin plet-
ing analysis of Ills! Year's exper-
m ts 'CviI h 101'I1 in' nay rOW rows.
"The average increns.c ror nar-
row-row cern i flour experiments

limited; "this is' not mearly en-
ough to 'Warrant the problems and
evpenses associated with narrow
rowa.
Mr... Hunter goes .on to explain
there lias to be n clear distinction
between marrow rows and corn in
higher populations. "We have
been able to show n significant
increase by raising the plant pop-
ulations above the normal I'm'
corn. But," he cautions, "During
our experiments in the last two.
Fears. there has been no problem
with a lack of moisture and we
have shown yield increases .tip to
and including .29,000 plants" per
acre."
I\Ir, 'Hunter also adds another,
note of caution. "Om. experiment-
al plots are 11.and-harvested,' he
says. "High populations usually
mean smaller cobs, wnich on a
field crop basis could mean higher
field losses at harvest. Onr ne-
cOnlmendalions are for popula-
tions around the 20,000 mark for
the Guelph area."
