Ontario's highways will be carrying hundred's of thousands of motorists to vaaa- tion and resort areas across the province — and behind them will leave thousands of tons of garb- age which will cost taxpayers over $700,000 to clean up. In a stepped up effort to keep Ontario's highways cleaner, the Department of Highways has launched an anti-litter campaign and has appealed for public sup- port through the news media, A summer drive in the country should be a pleasurable exper- ience. But every year an increas, ing collection of broken bottles, cigarette packages, hot dog wrap- pers, orange peelings and any number of others items of junk are thrown out of car windows by unthinking motorists. Most of the people who contri. bute to this "mess-up" would quickly pick up any debris found on. theirown front lawn, Vet the golden rule of aesthetics goes out the window with the rest of the garbage when their obvious self- ' interest is not involved. It costs the Ontario Department of Highways more than $65 a mile in litter control alone to keep its 13,000 miles of King's Highways neat and attractive. During the major clean-up period, the sfx months between May and October that's an average expenditure of, more than $3,800 every day. The cost of combating this prob- lem may well exceed $1,000,000 in the very near future unless people pitch in to help keep roads clean. in recent years an increas- ing number of motorists have been fined $50 under the Highway Traffic Act for littering.
