Armstrong's Pietenpol, ultra-light
Jim purchased the plans from
B. IT. Pietnepol of Minnesota,
about 7 years ago, -Mr. Pietenpol
designed this aircraft in 1922, and
sold plans for It, and even Pro-
duced about 200 in a. factory from
1932 1939. originally was peW-
ered With a modified Model "A":
car engine, and some of the orig-
inal planes are still flying, It iS an
all wood design except for wing
shuts, undercarriage and otitel
fittings' Which are metal,. The
whole frameiVork is covered
linen fabric. The Model "A" has
been replaced by an att.' cooled,
four cylinder horizontally opposed

engine and gave it a complete'
overhaul himself. It develops'
65 h.p. and with it the plane
crises about 80 m,p,h,
It is really a sport type plane
with two tandem open cockpits.
The wing span is 29 feet and the
length is 1,8' 6", and the empty
weight is 550 11)8. The wing design
is What is known as a high lift
wing and due to its large area, of
approximately 145 sq. feet it is
able to get off the ground in 200
Pietenpols are noted for
being able to stay in the air at a
very low flying speed Of. around
28 m.p.h.
The test flight came off with-

the controls. The first 50 hours of
flying time have to be put on the
Plane within 2.5 mile radius of.
