HEALTY SEED POTATOES

a good stand Some of the poinis
to keep in mind have been outlin-
ed by Dr. Busch, 'Botany
i)epartment, University of Guelph.
'.The first, and most important is
proper grading of the Seed prior
to cutting. All too often no effort
is made to romo\ partiallY-retteu
tubers, with the result that any
disease such as black log is read-
ily spread io otherwise healthy
seed piece*.
The seed should be warn.e4.for
two weeks prior to 'planting to
courage the bud "eyes" • to start
growing. It. has been a. amnion
practice recently to remove .the.
seed potatoes (rani slot' ige, cut,
and plant without any warming
perjod. H. the weather And soil are
cool or cold when planting, little
damage will result and a normal
stand is usually obtained, provid-
ing there is a. general and even
wormiug trend. If there are sev-
eral of cold soil after plant-
ing, se;,d-oieces decay and "Winds'•
may result. Planting cold seed In
hot dry soil usually causes sever
losses •from seed-piece decay. Since
it is almost, impossible to predict
what the wer.ther will be like for
-the two or three entieat weeks
after planting, it is safer to 'plant
warmed seed than to take
Chance with the veather.
Potatoes, after cutting should
newer be left sitting in a bulk-
truck An the sun, The truck
should be left in the shade or a
canvass used to cover the load-
Potatoes should not be Planted
immediately after plowing down a.
heavy stolid of t'ye, At least two
weeks should elapse before
before planting. As the rye breaks
down, otther a toxin is released or -
the oxygen content falls below
the level necessary to support
respiration: in any event, the
seed pieces are killed outright or
germination and emergence is de-
layed at least: two .weeic.
Dr. Busch feels that seed tre.at-
tnent is of questinable value, ex-
cept, hi a. few speeial circumstan--
oeS, Seed treatment can be ben:I:-
tidal if there is a severe vertic-
illium wilt problem; rotation with
a non-host crop such as corn,
small grain, soybeans or ha,y, pre-
ferably for two years,tan reduce
the probleta to 6 very low level.
Without rotation`,"rthere is no con-
trol of verticillium wilt from seed '
treatm en t.
The use of an insecticide Stith
as diazinon will give excellent
control for seed-piece decay tang-
ed by seed maggots. It is prob•
ably not necessary to treat the
early plantings, and it there
were more information on adult
emergence, it would only be
nocesSary to Arent at the time
they Were, actively flying.
With these two possible atten-
tions, no benefit has been demon•
strated through the use of seed
treatment in experiments con-
ducted during the past two years.
