HEALTH TIPS.
FROM THE '0.M.A.
Arthritis
Artbritis by definition, means
inflamation of the joint or joints.
There are many kinds of arth-
ritis, some of which tend to
produce disability, and some
which do not, the Ontario Med-
ical Association reports.
Very seldom [lees, arthritis
produce any degree of perman-
ent disability. Statistics shoW
that even in those instances,
where arthritis advances to the
stage where it is threatening
to cripple, adequate inedical
tare will prevent crippling in
fiVe cases out of six.
When a patient appears in a.
doellor's office complaining of,
pain in a joint, the doctor will
determine what kind of arthritis
is causing the pain, and how far
it has advanced.
For some kinds of arthritis -
gout is one - there is specific
,treatment that will cure, leav-
ing ao disability, in others there
may be a threat of disability.
but proper management will
prevent crippling in over 80% of
cases.
The 0.M A. says the vast ma-
jority of cases don't fall into
of these groups. In most cases
the doctor Will know that the
attacks of arthritis are short-
-
lived, will nut recur, and
will leave no disability, It lji
sometimes hard to be sure ‘si'hiqh
ones will progress, recur and
ultimaLey threaten to disable,
but his efforts can help Lq.e-
vent the disease from progres-
sing.
