Lord Ripen, Viceroy of India, has again asked to be allowed to return 'o England, un the ground of bad health. He made a sharp protest against the Cabinet's overruling the advice of the Indian Government in regard to Canda- har, eepecially after their declaration that the Candahar question should be settled according to the recommendations of the Viceroy's advisers. The hist Parliamentary election in Gloucester, Eng,, has been made a sub, jest of investigation, and the result is an appalling diwlusure of venality and cur- ruption. Of the 4,904 voters, 2,765 were bribed, and 286 inure were the bribers. The black list includes two aldermen, those magistrates, fifteen members of the City Council, sad numter- ous other city officials. Cwt (2o.to. r of a Bootle Lola, - The bogus Lord Beresford, alias Court- ney, walked out from the court -room during a dispute among the lawyers in Salt Lake, and no trace of him has since been found. This trial has been called, and acquittal was expected because of the absence of the principal witnesses. A requisition for him arrived from Eng- land, and recess was asked by the pris- oner's counsel in order to have time to examine the papers. During the argu- ment Beresford disappeared. Beaconsfield's will leaves Hugenden Manor and all his other property to his nephew, Coningsby Ralph Disraeli. The estate is strictly entailed in the male line, with reversion to female heirs, pro- vided all successors of the latter take the name of Disraeli, instead of their own surname. All his papers are left in the custody of Lord Rowton, with full discretion regarding their publication, except private correspondence, the using of which is to be governed by the wishes of the parties interested. There is a special direction that no part of hie cor- respondence with the Queen should be published without her consent, or that of her successors. There is a large decrease in import- ations of Mediterranean fruit. The re- putation of that as the region of the world specially designed by Providence for fruit growing is fast fading. It is found that America can furnish much better. The luscious Florida oranges are supplanting those of Sicily in Eng- land; and people here are beginning to discover that the grapes brought from Mrlaga packed in sawdust are no better than those yielded in the vineyards of Canada. And why should this not be so ? The climate of Ontario is as sunny and otherwise favorable ar that of Italy or northern Spain; and with better methods of culture, which by the way are rapidly improving under the careful experiments of the runt Growers' Asso- ciation, there is no reason why Canadian fruits of all kindf should not take a place in the world's markets. Will not Can- adian grapes "keep" in sawdust as well as those from abroad 1 A WORD ro Yet'. -Whether you leave your own Lente or a house where you have been a guest, 'never neglect to send back immediately the tidings of the safe conclusion of your journey In these days of Mysterious disappearance and ac- cidents a departing visitor is a source of more or less anxiety till a safe haven is known to have been reached.
