COLD VACCINES
Vaccines are designed to, pre-
vent, not to cure, illnesses, the
Ontario Medical. Association re-
minds readers.
There are more than 100 known
viruses Or other germs, any one
of which may cause a cold. More
types of viruses :and germs are
being identified: every year. A
vaccine Prepared against one of
these germs might stimulate the
body to manufacture antibodies
chat would prevent a cold caused
by that one germ. But it won't
protect him from the other 95.
Another problem is that imeiun-
ity thus created is not perman-
ent; it generally lasts only a few
weeks or months,
There are on tree market the so-
called polyvalent vaccines, which
are a mixture of several of the
most common known causes,
However, ihe persot who has
received this vaccine is protect-
ed only temporarily from some of
the common germs known to
cause :colds.
Remembering these limitations
it is recommehded that persons
with chronic cheSt conditions,
such as chronic hroncbitis, ein-
physema, or any chronic ailment
that might be aggravated by a,
cold, ask their doctor about cold
Vaccines.
Statistics show that in industry
time lost due to colds can be
substantially reduced if all per-
sonnel receive polyvalent cold
vaccine during the autumn.
in :smeltery, the O,M.A. advises
ed through the use of vaccines,
throrgh the usd of vaccines,
but the vaccines do help and are
recommended for some groups of

The harvesting of white beans
has started in some areas of the
county, and the complete crop
will be mature within seven to
ten days. A touch of frost was
reported in some of time low lying
areas and May have some effect
on the crop.
Spring grains have pretty well
all been harvested ill Huron with
the farmers now gathering the
remaining straw.

The 1967 corn crop leeks like it
'will yield high if it can escape
any early frosts. To date, it seems
to be behind in maturity nearly
