NO COLD CURE
the usual untreated cold lasts
one week and the treated cold,
seven days, `I here is now no medi-
cation that kills cold viruses, says
Dr. Michael H. 'K. Irwin, United
Nation's medical officer. Every
cold has to run its course.
if medications such as cough
syrups, cold tablets, inhalers,
nose drops, antihistamines and
gargles do any good at all, th.o.,•
just make you feel better,
while you are getting better any-
way, says Dr. Irwin in Public
At lairs.
Occasionally these medicines
may produce some temporary re-
lief from symptoms but they don't
cure the cold. in fact some can
even be harmful when used for
prolonged periods.
The old treatment is probably
the best, says Dr. Irwin. Get extra
rest, drink extra fluids, especially
fruit juices, and eat a varied
balanced diet. If you can't stop
smoking, cut down. Go easy when.
you blow your nose. Blowing too
hard can spread the infection to
your ears and sinuses.
See your doctor when your cold
drags on for more than two weeks.
He should also be conSulted if
you are bothered by breathleS•
severe or continnous
hoarseness, hard coughing
blood-stained sputum, severe
headaches, or rain in your ears,
race or chest.

that solhe, parents have lost
