THE PILL AND SAFETY
The Canadian Medical Assoc-
iation 'JourtiaI has issued a mild
warning to Canadan Doctors re-
garding the prescribing of ."the
pil;'. "Oral contraceptiNeti like
all drugs should not be used
indiscrimina tely. A completes
history and physical examination
should be carried out by the
physician before prescribing the
medication."
The editorial referred to three
preliminary studies recently com-
pleted in Great Britain to deter-
mine the risk of thrombosis (a
clot is a blood vessel or in one
of the cavities of the heart) in.
women taking oral contraceptives.
The studies were conducted
by the College of General Practice
the Medical 'Research Council and
the Committee on the Safety of
Drugs, A review of the findings
concluded that some types of
thrombosis were associated with
the use of oral contraceptives.
However, the report pointed out
that the blocking of an artery
attributed to the drug requiring
admission to hospital is quite rare,
The ()alluvial said that, the over-
all ("Olden( e of the, disease in
women of the reproductive age
in Great Britain has not increased
materially with the introduction
of the pill. The rate for thrombosis
was slated to be be 2,0 per 1.000
in 1961-6'2. 2,3 in 196.3-64, and
2.4. in 1.9C-01), "While tJiere has
been no overall increase in throm-
bosis, tin, use of oral contracep
tires in the same period, has risen
from zero to nearly 10% of all
women, One would expect an in-
crease in the disease if a major
relationship existed between the
pill and this type of illness."
In its conehtding comment:, the
editorial adviSed physicians that;
in addition to the physicial
animation before Oral contracep-
tives are prescribed, women
should be examined at regular
intervals for any evidence of
disease of the heart or blood ves-
sels. This action is recommended
because of the very slight hut
apparently real risk of thrombosis,

ALFALFA STANDS
CAN LAST LONGER
A ten of pasture in September
may cost you three tons of alfalfa
ne;:xt year, warns Crops Special-
ist Dr, B. E. Twanley, Ontario
Agriculture Oollege, Giuelph.
Alfalfa, doesn't send Wed to its
roots until its shoots have enough,`
food tar their use. If the leaves
are grazed or havested in the fall
before food has been sent to the
crown buds and roots, the crown
won't have enough energy to
shOot through the earth in the
spring,
(live the field a complete
rest in late summer and early fall.
In central Ontario; let your past-
ure take a vacation from Sept-
ember 1 to October 10. During
this period, use an older field
that is designed to be plowed as
pasture. If this older field j.,s
given a chance to grow during
August, it ,May supply much, of
the roughage required by the
herd ias September. goitre cases
it may be necessary to supple-
ment this with silage while the
alfalfa's "on vacation".
