'CONFEDERATION CARAVANS
IN WINGHAM, JUNE 10th
One of the highlights of the
confederation (!arvans is also the
heart of the historical displays.
A sculpture In bronze, treated
to a pale green reminiscent of the
Iftmses of Parliament in Ottawa
was created for the Confeder-
ation Train anti caravans by
Sylvia Lefkovitz, a Mon(real
artist now studying in Milan,
Italy..
She was the winner of a corn-
petition held by the. Canadian
Government Exhibition Com-
mission, producers of the train
and caravans for thp Centennial
Commission. Miss Lefkovitz's
original sculpture is in the Con-
federation Chamber of the train;
exact replicas arc in each of the
eight caravans.
(n the centre of the sculpture
is a stationary platform on which
stand frock-coated figures symbol-
izing the 36 Fathers of Confed-
eration. Around the circular pint-
from another plat - I
form rotates slowly, at a lower I
level. On it are the figures of the
People of Canada. united when
the British North America Act
came into force July 1, 1867;
farmers - businessmen. womeno
children, kilted Scots from. the
Maritimes. hunters and trappers
from the northern woods of
Quebec and Ontario.
The impact .of the sculpture
is emphasized by a lone spot-
light on it in the ConfederatiOn
Chamber. The only other ILems
in the elinmbtr, which is carpet=
A; in rich inue and walled in
scarlet, are the bronze crests of
Canada's first four provinces,
Quebec. Ontario, Nova Scotia and
