J. tire- cue signed an agreement Match providing tederat Lim/lead partecipatiou i.n a crop insurance prop= for winter wawa growers in Ontario. In signing. till. „reeve exprus- :-:ect h6 pleasure that Federal Government legislation had made this insurance available in Ont- ario. "Crop insurance is practical ana effective way of providing security for farmers who yearly face the risk of crop losses caus- ed by weather conditions, insects, or diseases", the Minister said. He was looking forward to a rapid expansion in the program in Ontario that would provide protection for farmers growing many other kinds of crops. I nder the program crop in- surance is available to winter wheat growers throught the province. beginning with acre- age seeded in the fall of 1966. Farmers have the option of in- suring their crops for 60, '70, or su -per cent of . their average Although Insurance plevIcied under the agreement 'with Ont- ario is limited in 1967 to winter wheat, the province is currently considering an insurance plan for oats, barley, and mixed grains. nder the federal Crop flume. oleo Act, Canada pays 25 per cent of. the premiums paid by farmers and reimburses a pro- aranee for 50 per cent of the cost of administering a crop insur- ance program. Prior to amend- monis to the Act last summer, the federal goverment paid 20 per of premiums and the amount of insurance that a farmer could carry was limited to 60 per cent or his average crop yield. to the Ontario program, the provincial government is contri- buting five per cent of the prem- ium cost and .50 per cent of the administratien costs. So far more than 400 farmers in 35 comities have applied to the Crop insurance - Commission of Ontario for coverage on their whiter wheat, Value of the in- surance is in excess of $730,000.
