food poisoning. slaphyloceal
food poisoning is probably the
most, common of all, the Canad-
ian Medical Association reports.
This type frequently produces
outbreaks at banquets, camps,
weddings and public functions,
and may InVolve a variety of
foods such as cheese, ice cream,
Potato and chicken Salad, grav-
ies and mayonnaise, The poison-
ing results in foods Which are
infected when handled by kitchen
staff with septic hands, and are
allowed to stand in a warm room,
a bacterial f.oxin is produced
and is not removed by subsequent
refrigeration,
One very serious type of food
poisoning, which fortunatedly is
rare, is Called botulism. Most out-
breaks of botulism, occur 'from
the use of tointe-caaned foods
which are not property processed,
Poisoning of foods is not uncom-
mon. For example, if acid foods
are plaiced in cadhanrplated
utensils such as pitchers or ice-
trays, suffreient, cadmittin Is
dissolved to cause severe illness.
Another type of food poisoning
occurs when shellfish, which
feed on poisonous foods such as
sewage, are eaten out of season.
Also, plant poisoning, especially
from inedibale mushrooms, may
cause severe illness and even
The G.M.A. recommends the
following predantionS to avoid
the above-mentioned food poison-
ing; (1) When attending public
gatherings, especially during the
smuttier, avoid the many quest-
ionable foods mentioned above
if they have been unrefrigeratedi
more than six hours; (2) be sure
your methods are scientifically
correct and. Well advised if you
do home food preserVing; (3) do
not eat shellfish out of season;
(4) avoid 'the combination of acid
foods and Ca,ditun utensils, and
(5) beware Of inedible mush-
rooms.

to encounter food poisoning. con-
sult yoUr family physician
promptly. the C.M.A. advises.
