TEE HURON SIGNAL, FRIDAY, APRIL '5. 1581.
Mdeesle.. N Marrs •s.
ln our opinion, girls are jinn se tea
ing to give up their extravagance in
dress as young men are—that is., when
it is necessary to do w. To the tact
that
as. ars w unwilling to relinquish
their pet rime sad luxuries is to be as-
cribed much of the falling off of matri-
mony. Marriage without adequate
means of support is a blunder that is
almost a crime; but no girl made of or-
dinary stuff will hesitate to share the
trials and sacrifices of the man she love*,
provided he has that competence, how.
ever modest. The thousands of happy,
smiling homes, where truelove constant-
ly abides, in spite of the slenderness (.f
the family income, sufficiently attest
the readiness of the average women to
surrender the baubles of wealth and
fashion in order to become a devetel
wife and mother. If the opposite sex
were uniformly animated by a similar
spirit, we venture to at.ert that the
number of maids and bachelor" would
rapidly diminish. The truth is, there
is too much love of dress and preten-
tious display in both sexes, and women
should not bear the blame alone.

The Rev. Joseph Cook, when in Edin-
burgh last mouth, delivered a lecture on
the above subject in the Free Assembly
Hall. The Rev. Professor Calderwood
presided, and the lecturer was supported
by a number of clergymen and other
well-known temperance advocateis. The
meeting having been opened with prayer
by th ;Rev. J. G. Cunningham, the lec-
turer began by stating that Germany,
Great Britain, and America, the three
most intelligent ,nations in the world,
were those which suffered most from the
swinishness and savagery .1 intemper-
ance. Mr. Gladstone had once said—
that the three three great historic scour-
ges—war, pestilence, and famine—had
not injured the English-speaking nations
of the world as much as intemperance.
It appeared to be beyond controversy
that Germans, Englishmen. and Ameri-
cans; w far as they belonged to the great
Teutonic stock, had inherited a certain
tendency to yield to this coarse form of
pleasure; up to this hour theyrappearee
to be Pagans still in contrast with other
nations on this old point. The powerful
passions which were awakening to eon-
teract this temptation were two—love of
and nutrition, and by • careful seance on of
