W. J. Anustrong, of Exeter, an iin-
pletaent agent, recently fmd a note,
and ran away with his hind girl, leaving
a wife and seven small children behind
Jamin Sinclair, a young lad working
in Mr. Schnarr's flax mill, Crediton, be-
came entauglwd in some of the tuachin-
ery and had his leg broken in three
places.
Mr. Alex. Davidson, of Seaforth Com-
enercial hotel, left for Lexington, Ken-
tucky, this week to attend a great horse
sale there. He intends purchasing s
blood stallion if lie can get anything to
suit hien.

Miss Lydia McCallum, Winthrop,
has just completed a quilt containing
four thousand pieces. The whole of this
work was done by her in the short
apace if two weeks. Where is the nett
young lady no deft with her needle.
On Friday night a complimentary sup-
per was given til Mr. John H. McDou-
gall in Bowden's late Wier's) Hotel, Sea -
forth, by the members of the Canadian
Lodge of Foresters and other friends, on
the occasion of Mr. McD. leaving for
Dakota.
SHEEP Disease. -Mr. Geo. Smalls-
combe, of t'sborne, lust a fine ewe with a
disease called the "grub." It is very
prevalent in England and Scotland. A
few drops of turpentine poured in its
nose would havesaved it. perhaps, if done
in time.

OBITUARY. -Died at. Hensall, an Tues-
day morning, 29th Mutt., Jane Barber,
beloved wife of Mr. John Scott, Sr., a
nature of Tarriff, Aberdeenshire, Scot-
land, and for many years a resident of
Tuckeramith, in the 55th year of her age.
Mrs. Scutt was well and favorably known
in this neighborhood, and though for
many years in delicate health, yet
she continued to discharge her usual
household duties till a few months ago
when deceased and her husband retired
to the village of Hensall.
Dashwood is situated on the boundary
between the t)wnahips of Hay and Ste-
phen, seven and a half miles from Exe-
ter, and boasts of two general stores,
two hotels, two carriage shops, two
blacksmith shops, two saw mills, one
grist mill, a shoe store, harness shop,
tin shop, tailor and carpenter shop, fur-
niture rooms, a jewelry and : eating
machine establishment, &c., also a daily
mall from Parkhill, 16 miles distant.
There is a good opening here fora doctor,
there being none nearer than Zurich, six
miles distant.
The following are the dates of the
spring shows in Huron this year: Turn -
berry, Wingham, Tuesday, April 12;
South Huron, Brucefield, Tuesday, April
19; West Iluron, Goderich, Wednesday,
April 13; East Huron, Brussels, Wed-
nesday, April, 13; Morrie Branch, Blyth,
Friday, April 15: Stephen and Usberne,
Exeter, Thursday April 21.

BIO WOR[. -One day recently Meson.
CohnCampbell and Robert Nott, of
the 8th con. of Mullett, cut twelve cords
of atovewood in seven hours on the farm
of Mr. Gordon Campbell. They say
that if anybody in the county of Huron
of their own weight can beat this they
would like to hear from therm. Their
united weight is 300 pounds. Come on
now, boys, try your muscle. This work
was done with a lancetooth saw.

OBITCARY. — On Saturday morning,
27th ult., the youngest sem of the late
Donald McRae, breathed his last. His
death was caused by s severe cold, which
settled on his lungs. He was about two
years of age.
EPIDIMIC.--A disease of a similar na-
ture to scarlatina, but in a very mild
term, is very prevalent in this vicinity.
The school is almost empty on account
of it. No deaths have occurred, and
none are likely ti take place, if proper
care be taken of the patient&
HYMRNR&I. -Otte of those transac-
tions, the consumneaiion of which is al-
ways looked forward to with no small
degree of pleasure, and which cause a
a flutter of excitement to those who
are to participate, occurred ore Thurs-
day, 31st ult., when Mr. Alex. McCau-
ley., of Hurun T,,wnship, and Miss Isa-
bella McRae, of this place changed what
some people call "single blessedness,"
but which a certain writer has perhaps
more fitly termed " single cttased-
nesa,.. 1../ "marriage happiness." A
large numher of the friends and ac-
quaintances of the bride and bridegroom
were invited, and a very enjoyable time
old, which he presented to Mr. Por-
teous, of the Avon Sorel. The little
fellow is quite lively, and is a genuine
ourtuoity in this Northern clime. If he
lives until 1883 Mr. Maher intends to
be c.irr.eJ int., Parliament on its back
when the general election comes around.

It is stated that nine million feet of
square timber will find their way to the
Quebec market from the Upper Ottawa
this season. A number of shantymen
are returning to Ottawa from Michigan,
the inducements being the improved
wages paid by the Ottawa lumbermen.

A Frenchman living in Kingston cut
a piece off his tongue because he believed
that it wagged too much, and often got
him into trouble. The final result of
this rigorous remedy remains to be seen,
but if all tongues that wagged too , much
were treated in the same way there would
be a censiderable amount of blood lost.
The Synod of the Reformed Episcopal
Church of Canada, will hold their annual
meeting' at Ottawa on the 20th of May,
when matters affecting the management
of the Church in Canada, will he dis-
cuaid, and delegates appointed to at-
tend the General Council to Philadel-
phia.
A foot race of 100 yards took place in
the park at Toronto, on Thursday after-
noon, between Duncan Foley, of Brant-
ford, and Jaynes Rosa, of Guelph, for
$225 a side. After several false starts,
the men got off well. Foley kept the
lead throughout, winning by three feet,
in 101 seconds.

matron, Mn. Taylor, the present matron,
being removed in order that gaoler and
m ttron may be husband and wife. Mr.
