HURON COUNTY
ROAD SYSTEM
OVERHAUL COMPLETED
In 1963 Huron County, along
with every other County in the
Province, commenced a detailed
study of its County Road System
which, among other things;
) Classified every County
road by type and use:
(b) Determined the roads
which should form part of
the County Road System.
(c) Determined the 5-year fin-
nancial requirements of this
system to bring it up to a
reasonable Standard..
(d) Resulted in a financial ar-
rangement with the Ontario
Department of Highways
by which the defined con-
struction wad maintenance
needs of the road system
Would be met.
The study' was cminpleted in. 1965
and appr ived crsinty Council.
in 1,965 and 1956. The approval by`
Council included revisions to the
County Road System, which
meant that some 47 miles
of roads in the system which did
not meet the requirernents for a
county road were removed from
the. County system to become the
responsibility of the local mitni-
cipality in which they are Iocat-
ed.
•The County agreed to bring
every mile of road reverted to a
local municipality up to the ac-
ceptable; standard for local roads
in this area at no cost to the
municipality involved. The
County also agreed to make a
cash -payment to every munici-
pality having roads reverted to it.
'This cash payment repte0ented
the municipality's stint's, of the
cost of maintenance on the road
for the next years. When these
monies are spent by the rattnici
Palfties on their road syStera they
will qualify for the usual subsidy
from the Department of Highways
as provided in the Highway 7m ,
