THE ;MUSSELS POST, BRUSSELS, ONTARIO
THURSDAY, SEPT. 15th, 1.900.
How many Canadians, do you
think, are at least 100 years old?
I asked a colleague at my office
the other day and he took a
guess at 5, Well, he was far off
the mark, According to the latest
figures of the Dominion, Bureau
of Statistics there are 684 centen-
arians in Canada,
I' must confess that the first
time I heard the DRS figure men-
deflect I was a little surprised too.
One of the fellows in the infor-
mation branch of the Centennial
commission who is a former
weekly newspaper editor'made a
close gness. Fe said, '"There
were two centenarians. F remem
hoc, in rho r.ow-c. wh.-'re 717ish-
ed my nape: so f7aoliznt the.re
(night to he one for every own
and bases, fiznre on rh- num,
her of woe* newspapers in Can-
ada."
The Dominion Bureau of Sta-
tistics figures are checked every
month and we at the 1,,,nmission
nr^ interested in these figures be-
cause next. yea! centenarians in.
Canada are going to be honored
by a special renten.nial or Con
federation scroll.
The idea of honoring Cana-
dians as old as ronfederation In
1907 is not a T1PW one that was
origii.ated b,7,, the rentennial
rom,mission, It was proposed by
a man living in 'Welland, Ontario.'
named Walter F. Gower who, at
the age of Sit, is not too far from
the century mark himself.
Mr. Gower, as a matter of fact,
has been sending out scrolls to
centenarians for sonic time. He
is a member of the Senior Citizen
Club of Port rolborne and for
some years now he has been con-
ducting his own little project for
eentenarians. The community of
Welland also endorsed his pro-
ject,
Two years a co Mr, Gower
started writing to officials at
artists have been busy making
rough designs for a special scroll
to be presented, next year.
There will be several hundred
Canadians born in 1.8.67, or be- G i
fore, who will be extra special
people when we: conduct our great
celebrations next year.
CROP REPORT
Planting of Winter wheat is
common in Huron County.
Talbot and Genesee are the two
recommended varieties for this
area. While both a re high yield-
ers, Talbot is usually shorter and
stronger in the straw and less
stIseeptible to rust. than Genesee,
The:white been harvest is pro'
greasing favotrably. Most corn
is now well dented and yield pro-
spects on most' fields look:Prom-
ising.
The cereal grain harvest will
he totally completed in Huron
rounly this week.
