The federal-provincial. Program
is not the only Centennial scheme
operating. Another one, called
Voluntary Youth Travel, provides
for Commission grants to private.
agencies or organizations. The
object is to expand already exist-
ing youth travel projects or en-
courage additional ones.
"I expected everyone here
would speak. with a real English
accent and I didn't think Toronto
would be as friendly as it is."
The quotation above, from a
16-year old visiting Toronto from
northern British Columbia, was
used by Michael ignatieff writing
about centennial "youth travel-
lers.' in the Globe and Mail. From
another, a young Montrealer,
came this comment; "'After
visiting Vancouver I realize we
have (11( cost beautiful country
in the whole world."
This year more than 4,000
young people in. 160 groups will
have participated in the Centen-

vincial Youth Travel program.
The total since 1964, when the
program was started as a pilot
Project. will be more then 8.000

The voluntary porgram differs
from the federal-provincial pro-
gram in that the Commission is
not involved in adrninistraton.
Well over 10,000 young people-
will have particivated this year
in these association travel Pro-
lects as a result of the Commis-
ion's 1999 grants program under
'the Voluntary Youth Travel
Scheme.
The young man from northern
British Columbia visiting Toronto
told his Ontario hosts: "What
surprises me is that you people
aren't any different from us."
If we accomplish only what is
implied in that sentence among
the thousands of participants
Canada's investment in the youth
travel programs will be well
worlh while.
