LEAD-BASE PAINTS.
DEADLY TO ANIMALS
"A fleck of lead-base. paint the
size of a quarter will kill a calf",
warns Q4 tario Department or
Agriculture and Food Exten,
siert. Veterinarian, Pr, A. J.
Neely.
Lead poisoning is .. common
and its mortality rate may be 100
per cent even though only a
stnill part is consumed. Young
calves are especially susceptible
they -die ‘yithin 12 to :24 hours
after they are poisoned. • Older
cattle may endure three • or .four
days. - Cattle suffering from
chronic polisoiling • irequently
show weakness and .a joint stiff-
tress, Dr, Neely relates. In the
acute form, lead poisoning may
result in a chomping of the jaws.

in circles and oven. blindness..
Many lead poisoning deaths are
often assumed to oe caused by
accidents since the blind cattle
sometimes get caught in fences
or drown In farm ponds. If any
of the symptoms occur, it may
not, be too late, however, to saver
the animal if a veterinarian is
called immediately. Since a cow
suffering from rabies and cer-
tain other diseases will show
similar symptons, early diag-
nosis is essential if the rest of
the herd are to be protected,
re prevent lead poisoning, dis-
carded batteries, soldered or
lead windows, and lead arsenic
sprays should not be accessible
to livestock. Even old paint can
be deadly. Only a lead-free
paint should be used to paint
barns, silos, Or fence posts.
