Health Tips from the
Canadian Medical Association
PHYSICAL FITNESS
lure emphasis should be given
to the importance of exercise for
middle•aged men and women,
the Canadian Medical Asspciation
sayfi.
Physical inactivity or lack of
exercise causes rapid rapid
degeneration of body tissues, and
this degeneration can occur in
the heart and lungs as well as
in the musculature, Middle
aged people have ex, tendency to
become apathetic towards exer-
cise as they become involved in
other environmental interests
and activities. I
The advance of automation,
and mechanization is also
a problem, in our society,
causing people to take part in
less and less physical activity.
For example, many many people
will spend a good deal of time
searching for a parking spot in
order to save just a few steps
missing the benefits of valuable
exercise. Others find It neces-
sary to have two or three tele-
visions sets in their homes to
eliminate walking from one room
to another to see a particular
show.
The CMA points out that we are
becoming a soft and flabby
race. And this applies particul-
arly to middle-aged persons who
have retired from participation
in active sport,.
Exercise for men,. and women
in this age group must he plan-
ned and vigort1I1S, and most Im-
portant. shoulti oe regular and
consistent. Equipthent and fac-
ilities are unimportant, and ex-
ercise can be done at any time of
day. A program, of exercise such
as the 5BX or 1013X Plan can be
done at home and takes only a
few minutes each day.
Lgular :.xercise will keep the
weight closer to normal and will
create physical .fitness and a
greater zest for living..
The Canadian Medical AsSoc-
iation in co-operation with other
organizations interested in pro-
moting physical fitness in Canada
recommends active participat-
ion in exercise programs for
middle-aged people as well as for
other ages.
