saves precious labour',
says Jacob Reimer, Pt. Rowan
"Arrazine has given us excellent weed control on -our
140 acres of corn. We combined a bumper .. crop,
averaging1.35-140 bus. to the acre", Mr. Reimer reports.
"We applied Atrazine when the corn was 4" to 5"
high, because we like to hit the weeds chat are already.
up. The trouble is the weeds come up so fast. We
thought we were in for trouble. But Atrazine knocked
them our in short order."
"I used to go through the corn two or three times
with the cultivator, but my time is too precious putting
on Nitrogen, to have to worry about cultivating—
. especially when Atrazi.nc does the job better."
"Although I plant tomatoes on some fields, follow-
ing corn, by working up the soil well, I have never had
any trouble with residues,-. • • . • •
"I certainly wouldn't want to go' back to growing
corn without Atrazine," • .•

PROTECT YOUR LIVESTOCK
FROM 1...IGHTEN,ING DAMAGE
Avoid livestock losses due to
lightening by grounding wires
anu fences.
'Summer is the lightening sea-
son. 4`.1ways make a routine check
of hydro wires", warns extension
Veterinarian Dr. I3,. J. Neely, Ont-
ario Department of Agriculture
and Food. "Hydro wires falling
law farm ponds have often elect-
rocuted pastured livestock. Sin.ce
cattle near to or touching fences
can bs the short-cut for lighten.,
ing boits, both wire and wood,
fence S should 'be grounded by the
occasional metal post or vertical
wire sunk into the soil."
How does lightening kill?
Shock paralyzes the' animal's
brain, also patayzing muscles
(including the heart)• which the
shocked part of the ';brain con-
trols. Not rvery animal struck by
lightening is killed. howevsr.
Some animals are left deaf or
partially paralyzed and., in time,
could recover. When a lighten-
ing bolt does strike. it does not
limit itself necessarily to one
victim tither. During a storm,
cattle huddle together for pro-
tection. If a bolt hits on animal,
the electrical' charge can travel
through the' group trom one
contact to another.
The cause Of these deaths is not
always easy to identify. especially
since lightening is not the only
quick killer. iBlackleg and lead
poisoning, for example, can also
kill oVernight, which could mean
the loss of large numbers, As a
precaution, a veterinarian should
be called for diagnosis at- once
when any carcass is discovered.
