NEWS ITEMS, As promised the following is the number I have given in vil- lages and small towns in every province except Quebec, It was copyrighted in 1937 and first in- troduced Oct. 4th of that year in Belle 'Creek, NIL Ladies and, gentlemen, every entertainer with iyhom I am acquainted tries to leave a message with his aud- ience. Somle will say "go to church on Sunday", others "sup- port charity", and the politicians tell you how to vote. My mes- sage to you is front my heart, Support your own village, help your own community. I was born near the little vil- lage of Bluevale in Ontario, seventy years 'ago. Bluevale had a population of about' six hund- red. To-day about. one third of that. Brassels, now my home town, had a population of sixteen hundred, to-day just one half. My mother carte from Sunshine, a sleepy little village that nestled on the Maitland river. It bad two or three stores, a blacksmith shop a harness and repair shop, a post office and church. Its industry consisted or a, huge saw mill plus a furniture factory. When the south winds of spring melted the icy grip of winter from, the river. Thousands of logs were floated in on the clear waters to feed the hungry mill. To-day the waters do not even stop. They may pause a moment and Atirmer a word of sympathY, and then flurry westward to the sea. There is nothing to stop for but, emptiness and loneliness. Never again will the barefoot boy hurry home from school to watch and listen to the whirr and, the whine of the saw as it fights its way *through the giant elfin oak and pine, Never again will he vatch, and listen at the open door of the blacksmith shop to hear. the tap-tap of the hammer on the anvil. All is silent. Mail killed this village. Man, because he was indifferent and didn't think of the future. Man, because he took his order sheets an his 'business to the larger centres and so Sunshine," was „Vied. Another generation and man with his blasting powder and bulldozer covered up the evidence. To-day cattle graze on top of what *as once .Was a prod village, a 'village that lived and loved and laughed. There is no- thing left now hut sadness and the tomb stones in the church yard. The same thing is hap- pening to villages and small towns throughout the whole Dominion. The same could hap:, pen to you. Don't let it. Paved roads, the automoone, the tele- phone, television, and worst of all, Simpson-Sears, Eatons and the mail order catalogue are killing your village. My argument is, a pound of sugar purchased in your ONVI1• village is just as sweet as sugar purchased in Moncton or Halifax. A gallon of gas from THE UNITED CHURCH VF CANADA Minister: Rev. A. M. A two inch nail is no longer or stronger bee cause you purchased it away from your' own home town. Your mer- chant is one of you. 'When don: ations are being asked for he is among the first to give and I never knew one single grocer who would let a child go hungry if in need. Support your own village Help your own coMmunity. As man to man, as one farmer t to, another I would say, remember if your nearest village deprec- iates so does your land value. If your merchant has to close his doors, no need. to lock yours. The horse is gone. Towns are not made by men afraid that someone else gets ahead. If every one works and nobody shirks you can raise a town from the dead And if when you make your own private stake your neighbour makes one too Your town will be like you want it to be, it isn't the town its you. Ladies and gentlemen this is your village. It's future is in your hands, yours to build, yours to destroy. I thank you.. Truthfully Yours T. K. F.
