Wheat and the N. r. In the Peterborough Review (N. P. organ) there have appeared several let- ters, currently reported to be written by a Conservative ex -M. P. fur the riding of West Peterborough. In.these letters the grinding -in -bond fraud is thoroughly exposed. The writer states that the regulations for grinding-ir.-bond "practically nullify the duty on wheat." the working of the system has been to throw the milling business into a few hands, and "to make hundreds of other mills in the" country valueless." He would not "accept a present of the beet mill in Peterborough and be bound to rue it to the full capacity for the year." He then gives facts to show that a large lot 4 Canadian spring wheat has been lying unsaleable all winter, because the large mills have been running on Minne- sota wheat: This is another sample of the truth of the assertion that the N. P. tariff was designed to rob the farrier, and put wealth in the way of the manu- facturer. The exodusto the North=west has com- menced in real earnest, the nutnber of persons passing through Stratford dur- ing the present week, numbering fully 1,000. On Thursday a special train, consisting of 9 car loads of freight and 100 passengers from Goderich and vici- nity, went to Dakota, and yesterday another party nearly as large, from• the neighborhood of Seaforth, followed them - ell taking with them s good supply of implements, household goods and live stock, to commence life in the new coun- try. In the latter party was our old friend, Mr. John Thomson, formerly market clerk, Stratford, and his son, Mr. R. R. Thomson, of Goderich. Besides these, nn Wednesday, a party conducted by Mr. R. W. Prittie, Toron- to, consisting of about 150 persons, passed through, and the regular after- noon express contained eleven coaches, most of which were filled with through passengers. Of these, a great number were for Dakota. Yesterday (Thuaday), the regular ex- cursion trains brought about 300 or 400 passengers from the east, and 100 more joined them here—quite a number be- ing front Listowel and intermediate sta- tions. Of these, too, a large proportion were for Dakota. Mr. W. N. Warbur- ton accompanied the Tuesday party as far as Chtc ago, and Mr. T. N. Ford; travelling passenger age --t, G. T. R., went through to Winnipeg yesterday. All the regular west bound trains are unusually heavily laden, the bulk of the passenger being emigrants. The move- ment is just begginnutg, and from pre- sent indications, the drain on the life blood of the country will be enormous. On convening with some of the "exo- dusters," we learned that their reasons for preferring Dakota to Manitoba were suany. One and all expressed the opin- ion that the control of the North-west by the syndicate would prevent settle- ment. The land in Dakota was offered on much easier terms, and the rate of freight to Fargo was only $154 a car, while it we. $2.13 to Winnipeg. Then the railway companies gave a rebate of $46 a car to settlers, which still further reduced the'ezpenae of emigaating A correspondent who informs us of his prospective change of residence, says "it is no wonder that British born sub- jects servlet seMrsit 4. be bullied an/ tyrannised over by s pack of spseuWow and land sharks, but will go where thy colt Ind 'oil and intelligent areata, and where th can met any giasatit of land almost their event trema. iur Gov. tannest a*diag oil sighs not only th hone and einesi l the ones - to. but the ard-earned stioewryflif years bygone, w is landed oseef to our American eo ma " if fu that confir- modetn be of the destioatiai s4 the thousands o are moving westward, it cam be found the fed, that of the W)0tw meta through on the (int excotside sit Atratford oe the 4th inst., o Warned Winni the remainder dr pp g off at in Sole pints in !her dies Awl it the Tory pt and spotters tell roe "ere is n . ev,•dn• (Rogow.
