When I took over the job or
organizing' Canada's biggest
celebration in history I ran into
a number of pessinfists, even a
few cynic ;r,
This is the sort of line they
gave me; "Canadians aren't
noisy patriots. You'll nave a tough
job stirring up much flag wav-
ing for 1967."
Well, some of their, facts were
correct but the spirit in which
those few pessimists presented
their' views to me was not what I
accept as Canadian. 1 have tra-
velled long and far enough /11
this country to know that Cana-
dians really have strong positive
feelings about their country.
I could agree with some of the
statements by my pessimistic
friends if they were in a different
context. 'Canadians are not .given
to wild demonstrations of patriot
ism in their own country. Such
things can ernbara.ss us. I believe
our kind of nationalism, is more
thoughtful than emotional and
that is why I believe fervently
that our Centennial, :be a
successful and meaningful event
in our history.
Yes we may have difficulty at
times in deciding what we are,
what we are for and wnat we are
against in the world. But we
know what home is and though
we may be embarrassed to express
it„we love our laticl Perhaps f dis-
covered this throtigh travel abroad
when I met Canadians far from.
home. When we are world travel-
ing we are mere -apt to open up
and reveal to other people our in-
aer thoughts about our country.
One particUlar instance conies to,
my mind. I Was breakfasting at,
a small hotel in London, P4ngland,
a few years ago and became en-
gaged in conversation with a
young man across the table from
111A lie was a Canadian working
at an airline office in London.
With no prodding from me he
poured out all his thoughts about
home and abOut Canada.
"I'm not a. nationalist." he
said: "In fact I'm against, nation-
, TA _IMO,
alism, It causes a lot of trouble
'iii the world. That's why I like
country. We're not aggressive
nationalists. But really, mister,"
he said, "It's hard to describe my
feelings about nw country." He
thought his feelings for his home-
land was not just the house he was
born in brick hi Ontario, nor was
it necessarily his home town. It
was the lake country where he
used to go on canoe trips in the
summer, the big rushing rivers
and the roads' that go forever.
"I always felt if I couldn't
find a job in Canada I could al-
ways go to the north country and
trap and hunt — something one
couldn't do over here — and at
least make a living," he said.
admited it was just a "fancy of
the mind" — probably he'd starve
— but Canada alwayS gave him a
feeling of security, he said. "I
always felt the Rockies or the
Gaspe wilderness were Mine, even
though I didn't go there every
weekend. (I only saw the Rockies
once.)"
The. young man went on, ex-
posing, ills mind and being very
sentianeatal and Patriotic,' I
thought to myself he probably
would be far too inhibited and
embarrassed to talk like that
back home.
Prom; now to 1967 Canadians,
as individuals and in groups,
large and small, are anding way8
to express their true feelings
about Canada, I'll tell you more
about these in' future reports.
