CENTENIVIAL ACTIVITIES

.Mooney, Code:rich has been
named Huron County- chairman of
tne Women's Centennial Activities
Committee.
The appointment was announc-
ed by the Hon..,laines A. C. Auld.
Minister of Tourism and Infor-
mation and chairman of the Ont-
ario Cabinet Centennial Com-
mittee.
She will, work to encourage
Centennial planning, assist in the
co-ordination of area celebrat-
ions and activities scheduled for
1967 and aid. in other regards
women's groups concerned with
C e n te iii a I observances.
Mrs. Mooney will be one of
four county chairm.en working
with. li rs. J. Clark Chambers,
Owen Sound.. regional chairman
of the committee.
A graduate of Queen's Univer-
sity and former school teacher,
Mts. Mooney maintains a keen
interest in educational matters.
ACtifSre in community and muni-
cipal organizations, she is a form-
er mayor of Goderich.
Mrs, Mooney holds membership
in the Huron County Historical,
Society and is a descendant of a
ploneer family which traces its
origins to the United Empire
Loyalists and early 19th-Century
Irish settlers in ;Ontario.

The Ontario Sasety League
reports a sign seen. in front of

The Ontario Safety League
urges all would-be drivers to take
lesson8 from a .properly qualified
and reliable commercial driving
instructor if high school driver
instruction, or PRO Drivers
courses are not available.
Drivers. are reminded that the
yellow caution. sign doesn't say:
"C'mon, hurry, up and you can get
through." It does say: "You've
got time to clear the intersect-
ion if you'r in it.
SOme people are dubious about
thb often repeated claims that
high school driver instruction
reduces accident expectation
substantially. The Ontario
Safety League 'Would like to draw
their attention to a recent large
scale survey in Illinois which
showed that teenagers who had
Staidied driver education are in-
valved in only half at many
acohleints, and coavicted
of only ono-third as many Vio,
latiorks as those who have not
taken the courae:

516,776 of the state's licensed
drivers, aged 16-20. Of these
176,832 had s4tdied driver edu-
cation.
This group showed a rate of
171 moving-vehicle convictions
per 1,000 drivers, as compared
with, a rate of 493 convictions
for the non-driver-educated
group, ntiver-ed youngsters were
involved in accidents at a rate
of per 1,000, While the others
had an acedent rate of per
1,000.
