EARLY CORN PLANTING
ESSENTIAL FOR MATURITY
Corn, like 'wine, is only ex-
cellent at maturity, and Outer-
io's miners should resolve now
to improve the quality of their
corn.
`'Early plaiting Is essential"!
advises Dr. J. E. Gamble, Crop.
Science Department, Ontario Agri-
cultural College, Guelpr, "The
first of May should be a target-
date to plant corn. Any delay will
increase moisture at. harvest. In
addition, planting after the mid-
dle of May can seriously reduce
corn yields.
Is there any danger from
spring frosts by planting so early?
"A spring frost may destroy ex-
isting leaves,' replies Dr. Gamble,
"but in practically all eases, com-
plete recovery (including high.
yields) is' made. lt's much more
serious to suffer a frost after the
corn has flowered, since such a
frost will kill the plants. Many
farmers found this out last fall."
Early hybrids are also helping
to overcome the maturity prob-
lems, according to Dr. Gamble.
The right hybrid should be grown
in the right region; it should not
require more heat units than are
available. There is now a strong
trend in Ontario to use even:.
earlier hybrids than used in the
past. „.
"I cannot overemphasize the
value of mature corn", adds Dr.
Gamble. "In addition to high:
quality, mature corn. prevents
storage losses or drying time and
costs due to high moisture. It
also permits earlier harvest in,
pleasant weather. More important,
the early harvest allows the
fields to be prepared for next
year's crop and, of course, per-
mits planting at the recommended
early seeding!
More corn recommendations
are now available in the Ontario
Department of Agriculture pub-
lication, 1966 Report on Ontario
Hybrid Corn Performance Trials.
It is available from County
Agricultural representative or by
writing to the Information Branch;
Ontario Department of Agricul-
ture, Parliament Buildings,
Toronto.
