My column this week is a
speech 1 gave in 19a2 for the
Saskatchewan Wheat Produeers'
Association at Meadow Lake. In-
cidently, I was made an honorary
life member at the conclusion of
the program.
Wheat Is a grain, grown mostly
in the west to keep the farmer
broxe, and the .uyer crazy. It is
planted in the spring, mertgagen
ni the SI1010101' and frozen in tne
fall. The man elle can guises the
closest to the strength of the
protein contained therein, and tile
moisture content is called a grad-
er by tile wheat board and a
lousy liar by the farmer. R. is sold
by a marketing board called satis-
factory board. They're satisfied.
their salary is more than they aro
worth, 'The government is satis-
fied they put them there. The
country that bays the wheat is
satisfied and so are the elevators
and the railroads, so tee termer
has 10 be. After you sold your
'wheat the price went up, if you
buy it, it comes down when the
government andd wheat board
are completely bewneered and
and can't sale The- government
gives a donation to lengland of
50 million dollars, ienglana buys
30 million bushels of wheat (roux
Russia, Russia, buy6 70 'upon
from. us and everyone
again. Last year the Manitoba
farmer sent a man to Winnipeg to
check on this wheat board, After
a week he sends this wire. Some
think the price will go up. Some
think it will go down — So do 1.
— 1 don't think. Whatever you
do will be wrong. Maybe it will,
maybe it won't. Maybe you should,
maybe you shouldn't. Sometimes
it does, sometimes it doesn't. Act
at once. I'm committing suicide,
WED,-THURS.-
suggest you. do the same.
Wheat is sold by grade size, eau.
1 hard Northern, No. 2, 3,4, 5, 6 etc.
but it is almost impossible to get
No. 1 Hard owing to such a rigid
test. The elevator Man Picks out
one kernel which is placed on an.
anvil. He then takes a sledge and
hits this kernel with all his might.
If the sledge glances and too
wheat bounces you have a 50-50
chance of No. 1 Hard. if only
cracked its No. 11. A bottle of
whiskey placed on tire top of a
load of wheat, so the elevator man
can see it, will sometimes grade
from No. 4 to the NO 1. Wheat is
sold by quota, that is, so much
'per bushel per acre. If you can
persuade the wheat board that
your grandmother owns the north
I
half of the south section and
your mother-ineaw the east halt
of the south part you may ,raise
your quota. However there is
always a shortage of grain cars.
these cars are always sent where
the farmers have Deem dried out,
hailed oat, or frozen out, cir where
they don't grow wheat at ail. Cue
good thing is that the wheat
farmer has no labour problem.
He hires a man for 3 years. At
the end of 3 years tne farmer
owes tne hired man so much he
gives him the :arta' and he goes
to work for the urea man, At the.
end of another 3 years he gets his,
farm. back. The quota is so small,
that the farmer just spends it ibe
at a time. In. Saskatchewan its
the quota room, in Ontario the
beverage. La the. quota room the
farmers sit day after day :cussing
the wheat board the hail , and
the frost, and figuring how they
can get more quota and grow
more Wheat.
Now if you will excuse me I
have to meet a fellow in the quota
