Another Terrible Blunder Results
Disastrously to the British
Troops.

A strung force of Been have been
shelled by General Vibart at 6,000
yards and compelled to retrtat.
A messenger from Pretoria says that
all is well there, The garrison can hold
out for six months.
A Durban despatch says it is reported
there that the Boers have raised a force
of not less than 7,000 men, and are now
at I*ing•nek. It is thought that the
Koen will continue the war rather than
accept the terms held out to thein by the
British Government, and that notwith-
standing the presence of General Wood,
they are strong enough to prolong the
struggle until better conditions are offer-
ed
A Mount Prospect Natal, despatch
says Gee. Colley, with six companies,
took possession of Spitzkop, a position to
the left of I*ingsneck. A severe en-
gagement took place on Saterday bet-
ween the Boers and Colley's force. The
latter was driven from his position at
Spitskop. There was great loss to both
slides. 'Many British officers were killed
a.d wounded.
A later telegram from Colley's camp
says that all the wounded are Dowing in,
and agree in reporting that Colley has
been killed and only a hundred British
mewed. The Boers charged up the hill
four times and were about to retreat
when the British were forced to retire
because the reserve ammunition had not
Doan taken to the extreme of the BUM -
It is aseerfained that the enemy has
been largely reinforced by the Boers
from the Orange Free State.
The Boers were beaten off at Wakken-
etroom after two hours' fighting. The
British Ices is slight.
Another account of the fight at Spitz -
top says that when the ammunition fail-
ed the slaughter was fearful. Finally
the British made s desperate but =suc-
cessful rush. The 60th Foot fought
their way back to camp. It s stated
that only seven seen of the 58th survive,
The camp is being fortified at every
point.
Two companies of Highlanders re-
mained on the summit at Spitskop after
the retreat and began throwing stones
down on the advancing Boers, and sub-
sequently received them with the bayon-
et, The guns at Mount Prospect greatly
checked the pursuit of the Bntish.
