Clinton Teacher Chosen
By .Huron Liberals
Five hundred delegates to the
Huron Liberal nominating con-
vention at Central Huron Second-
ary School Thursday night chose
Maitland E. Edgar, of Clinton,
as their candidate in the Nov. S
federal election.
Mr. Edgar beat out Gordon
McGavin, of Walton, who was
defeated in the last federal elect-
ion. William Elston, president
of .the Huron Liberal Associotiou
and. A. Y. MacLean, of Seaforth,
were also nominated but with-
drew their names.
John Addison, MP for York
North, was speaker in place of
Solicitor-General Larry Pennell,
MIP for. Brant-Haldimancl, who
had to cancel his appearance be-
cause of other engagements.
Murray Gaunt, MPP for Huron-
Bruce, and Gordon Beaton, 'of
Markdale, Liberal organizer in
Western Ontario, also addressed
the delegates.
Mr, Edgar was born near Win-
ham on the 2nd concession of
Morris Township. He received
his BA. degree from the 1Thiver-
sitY of Western Ontario.
He is married to the former
Mary Bowman of RR 5, Brussels.
They have three daughters and
two sons.
District Governor
Pays Official Visit
To Brussels Lions Club
The Lions Club met on Monday
evening of their regular supper
meeting with 23 members pres-
ent. Following dinner and 'a
guess, won by Lion Russel Knight,
a sing song was led by Lion Cecil
McFadden, The minutes of the
last meeting rwere read and
adopted.
An enjoyable reading was
,given by 'Mr. Levinsky (alias Mrs
George Mutter). Lion Wilbur
suggested that the request for
CNI13 donation be left for the
present time and if the quota is
met by individuals, to give our
money to Lake St. 'Joseph's fund,
as Was done last year. This was
made a motion and seconded by
Lion Charles Thomas, Carried.

. E. Cardiff Retires
From Political Life
L. El. Cardiff, of Brussels has
announced his retirement from
the field of politics.
He has been (Progressive Con-
servative m.ember for Huron for
the past 25 years. He did not, seek
nomination at the riding's Pro-
gressive Conservative Nomination
meeting in Clinton on" Tuesday
night.
Mr. Cardiff is not retiring for
reasons of health. He is In good
health and is retiring from poli-
tics to enjoy some leisure years.
Mr. Cardiff was born in Brus-
sels in 1389, and received his
primary and secondary education
here. He served the Township
of Morris, where he has farmed
for many years, as a councillor,
for 12 years and 'was reeve for
eight consecutive terms.
He has been. the secretary of
the North Huron Plowmen's As-
sociation since that organization
was formed.
His wife is the former Ada May
Morrison. They have three child-
ren, two sons, Ross and Clark,
and one daughter, Mrs. Dean
(Leola) Davison,

Chosen By Huron •PC's
Robert g, McKinley, 37-year-
old, RR 1, Zurich farmer, was
'nominated Tuesday evening as
PrdgroiSsive ,Conserva,tive candl-
date for the riding of Huron for
the forthcoming Nov.8 election.
Voting was held Tuesday night
at Central Huron Secondary
School in Clinton, when more
than 800 persons filled the audi-
torium, The meeting was termed
the largest ever to be held in the
riding. Guest speaker was Mich-
*1 Starr, labour minister in the
Diefenbaker administration.
Six other candidates besides
Mr. McKinley who were nomin-
ated and ran for office were
William J. Dale, RR 1, Clinton,
Clayton Laithwaite, Goderieh
Township; Roger West, Wing-
ham; John Durnin, Auburn;
George McCutcheon, Brussels,
and Stanley Swaren, RCAF Sta-
tion, Clinton, Mr. McCutcheon
was runner-up in the balloting.
Mr. McKinley won on the third
ballot. His nomination was then
made unanimous by the other
six candidates, He will be oppos-
ed by Matland Edgar, ;i6, of Clin-
ton, who was last week nominat-
ed as Liberal candidate.

dent of the Ontario Conservative
Association,

Couple Honored On
Their 50th Anniversary
Relatives, friends and neigh-
hours; in this corniannty, as well
as many from distant points,
called at the home of Mr, and
Mrs, John Rowland of Brussels,
on Saturday afternoon and even-
ing to bring them greetings on
their Golden: Wedding anniver-
sary.
The home was attractive with.
beautiful flowers and a multitnde
of cards received in honor of the
happy occasion. Among the an-
niversary message of Congratu-
lations and good w:sibes 'were
ones from Prime Minister Lester
Pearson, Opposition Leader John
Diefenbaker and. L. E. Cardiff.
The tea table was laid with a
handcrafted crocheted cloth,,
made by the bride of 50 yearn
ago, especially for this occasion,,
centered with a :decorative

arrangement and candles.
Guests were admitted by Anal
Davidson and the gtiest book was
attended by Kendra Rowland, of
Purlington, both granddaughters
of Mt-, and Mrs. Rowland.

To Have Group Display
At Brussels Fail Fair
The September Horticultural
meeting was held in the •Brussels
Library Monda,y, September 20th,
at 8 p.m. The president Mrs. Carl
Hemingwa,y presided.
The meeting opened with 0
Canada. The minutes of the pre-
vious meeting were read and
approved. The report of the
flower show and supper was
given, also the Vinancial State-
ment and correspondence. The in-
'voice for fall bulbs has been re-
ceived.
Mrs. Hemingway called for
nominations for secretary-treasur-
er, to fill the vacancy caused by
the death of Mrs. E. Shurrie. Mrs.
R. W. Stephens nominated Mrs.
E. Cudmore, motion seconded by
Mrs. D. Dunbar. There were no
further nominations, motion car-
red.
Putting a group display in the
Fall Fair was discussed and Mrs.
T. Leeming moved we take part,
seconded by Mrs. D. Dunbar. The
following ladies to make them:
Dominion Day, Mrs. R. W.
Stephens; Church, Mrs. 0 Jow-
usma; Easter, Mrs. E. Cudmore;
Birthday, Mrs. D. A. Rann;
Thanksgiving, Mrs. 1), Heming-
way, Mrs, C. Hemingway.
The roll call was answered by
22 members. There were five
guests present.
Miss Linda, Wilson favoured
the meeting with two delightful
' solos accompanied by MrS. W.
Kerr. Linda was thanked and tire-
sented with a small gift.
Mrs. Carl Hemingway gave a
splendid report of the convent-
ion and showed pictures taken at
it. Mr. C. Hemingway showed a
film. "The promise of spring"
Mrs. Jowusma gave a talk on
the eulture of bulba and answer-
ed many questions.
Mr. Knight won the door prize.
"The Queen" closed the meet.
