History Brussels Branch 218
Royal Canadian Legion

The Brussels branch 218 of the
Royal Canadian Legion (formerly
known as the Canadian Legion
of the British lempire Service
League) was organized in August
1931 and received its charter an
the 2nd of November 1931 with
the following charter members:
Fred W. Barehell; William H.
Bell; S. B, Elliott; Edward Gar- .
ton; George Harman; Joseph E
Kelly; C. F. Lockwood; George
Manning; Harold Phillips, Robert
Patrick.; Stanley Rutledge; Percy
Sellers; William Stiles; C. H.
Stsibbart; E. Roy Thuell; Wilfred
E. Willis and J. Pedgriff.
Before the Branch received its
charter, these comradas travelled
many miles to Branch 134 Mount
Forest for their meetings every
month. When the branch was
formed, these comrades met in
their homes and in tne Town Hall.
Their membership dwindled
down to 13 members, at the out-
break of World War Two, but
they held the braach together
until the younger veterans return-
ed home and swelled tho ranks to
the present 110 members.
The old hall, also on Turnberry,
Street, 'was purchased on the 4th
of May 1946 from Mr. Norman
Thompson, and was mantained
until the new hall was completed
at the first of this year,
Comrade Charles Lockwood was
the first secretary but only held

The July meeting Was held at
home of Mrs. Rae Houston Mon-
day evening, evening July 19.
The meeting opened with sing-
ing of hymn 346 "Through. All
My Life 0 Lord My God". Mrs.'
Wilbur Turnbull read the script-
ure from. John 1 1-10. An article
',Walking With God" was read
by Mrs. Ken McDOnald followed
by prayer.
The topic "Faith and the
Fragmented Life, the Touch of
was read by 'Rumen Hands"
Mrs. Kenneth McDonald.
minutes of the last meeting
were read by the secretary. Roll
call from, Psalms was answered
by 12 ladies. There were 3
guest.S. :Hymn 304 "O For A
Closer Walk With God" was
sung followed by the Lord's
Prayer repeated in unison. Bible
quizes were conducted by Mrs.
Ken McDonald and Mrs. Harold
Bolger.
The business was conducted

Rev. S. J. Stewart, Moles-
worth, conducted the service in
Knox Church on Sunday, July
11th and announced the services
for Ally and August. There 18 no
service on July 18 and 25th, but
Services will, be held throughout
the month of August. Mr. Nelson
will be back with us for August
15th,, 2.211d, and 20th. The Cen-
tennial date is Sept. 12.

examination.

Mrs. Fred narkpatrick and,
family, London, visited with Mr.
and,Mrs. Mac McIntosh and other
friends in the community.
Mr. and, Mrs. August Reimer
and son, Swift Ctrrent, Sask.
spent several .days with Mr. and
Mrs, Frank Smith .and all were
at Niagara Falls for a day.
Brian 'Evans left last week for
Saskatchewan.
Mr. and Mrs. Mac Engel were
in. Stratford on Sunday with
Mr. and Mrs.. Wm. Engel and
family.
Miss Mary Martin, twin
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jos.
Martin underwent an emergency
appendectomy in Listowel hospital
last week.

The Alidsumm.er Session for
pianoforte and theory examin-
ations was held recently at
13lyth by the Royal Conserva-
tory of Music. Mr, William
France presided for the pract-
ical examinations in pianoforte.

St. Ambrose Parish Conducts
Summer SChool Of Religion
During the week of July 6 to
July 9, St. Ambrose Pa ash, con-
ducted a summer Beaton of re-
ligion for the children of the
Brnssels area, The Pastor, Father
Mooney, obtained the assistance
of Sister Cajetan C.S.J. and Sister
Margaret Ann C. S.J. and Miss
Yvonne Connelley,
The Sisters are teaching sped.,
ialists of St. Joseph, London,
Ontario. Miss Connelley is on
summer leave from her school in
RI tc hener,
The average attendance at the
school was 53 children per day.
The parents are to be com-
mended for their interest, and
co-operation in helping to make
the summer school a success.
The children came from. Grey,
Morris, and McKillop townships.
The day began at 3 a..m and
cloSed at 3.30 p.m. All classes
were held in the rooms at St.
Ambrose Church. The classes
were around two features. At
9 a.m. and, 1.00 p.m. there was a
sound and color film on, the life
or. Christ. At 11.30 all children
gathered in the church for a
Community Mass an.d Homily.
One feature of the Mass was the
offertory procession as requested
by Pope Paul VT in the decree on
"The Liturgy",
One aim of the school was to
make the children aware of
their dignity as children of God,
and to lead them to Christ and
iTie Church.
Dinneriline was always a treat
when ice cream was served to
thr children,

ing a week's vacation with their
