Dr. R." M. Aldis told, Elwell County Council 'in present- fag the report of the OountY Health Unit. "As the tourist season begins to burst upon this county," he said, "one wonders how long Lake Huron will remain rela- tively for industrial and rec- reational deVelopMent; how long 'till it, too, becomes an open sewer like much of the great Lake down stream. We do know that right now the rivers are carrying pollution into Lake auron; in turn many ditches and streams help to spoil these rivers.. The respon- ibility for controlling pollution is local and r or provincial, with' varied enforcement in each mu- nicipality and province. Effea tive control rests iupon national enlightment. Let us hope that the Royal Commission on Tax- ation will come up with re- comMendations which will in- clude a more effective formula for underwriting pollution con- trol costs in our country." Dr. Aldis cited large sums being spent in the U.S for in- stallation of control units, and for Great Lakes studies while the total Canadian effort a- mounted to about $2:50,000. The M.O.H. demonstrated for council the operation of the audio-meter, used to ascertain if students' hearing is defective. In the larger schools Grades 2," 4 and 6 are tested; in one-room schools all pupils are included. Of 4475 screened to date, 94 have been found with a sus- pected hearing loss. Rabies incidence is down in the county. Dr. Aldis reported only seven cases, including a deer, a fox and a skunk. "We are very happy about the situation this year," he said.
