The 1,000-acre yard, described :by celit president Donald Gordon us 'the "most advanced freight claisification yard in the world," has 159 miles of track, 11 coutroi towers and cabins, 501 track Switches and a complex system): of communications for co-ordinat- ing operations. It took 10,000 miles of under- ground wiring to set up the sys- tem which includes seven radio systems, 84; talk-back speakers, 65 portable radios, 31 teletype machines and an internal tele- phone system. The highly-automated centre which can inspect 5,000 freight cars a day, replaces five other shunting yards in Toronto which will open up large tracts of land for development, Between 1,000 and 1,500 per- sons will, be employed at the yard, CNR says it had to build 100 miles of track this in addition to the 150 miles inside the yard and 53 bridges and grade sep- arations in order to get trains into the yard. The CNR says the new- facil- ities will speed shipments with the length of time a car is in a, freight yard cut in half, At the heart or the new yard. are two man-made humps -- small hills over which an engine pushes freight cars. The tars coast down the other side of the hill and are switched on, to a pre-seleeted track to join cars of the same destination. Before ar. incoming car reaches the yard its destination is teletyped ahead. Every car is checked against this list as the train enters the yard and the information is fed into e„ computer. By the time a car roll over the hump the comiluter has decided which switch should be opened. While the car is rolling down the hump, radar measures its speed and another device its `Weight. The speed is feed into the com- puter which automatically starts a speeed retarder which slows the car so that it joins others exactly four miles an hour. REPORT FROM QUEEN'S, PARK By Murray (taunt, M.F.P.littron=firtice The agricultural estimates came before the Rouse on Thursday. pointed out, that the basic prob- lems facing Ontario farmers is' the lack of adequate income. It was pointed out that the fann- ers income in relation to his costs hag declined steadily until it is now 30 per cent lower than it had, been in 1949. In the same period the figure of his fellow worker in industry has risen no less than 504 per cent. This spread of 84 per cent represented a subsidi- zation of the economy by the farmer, the biggest subsidy to 'Canadian llistoiT. I made the point that the province of Quebec does much More to help out its farmers than does Ontario, So :that Ontario farmers are actual- * at a distinct disadvantage When they try to compete with Quebecers. I WS also critical or the Gov, ernmelit's "lackadaisical and laissez-faire attitude!' in failing to co-operate with. Federal farm- erw aid prog, rants, notably A-R.U.A. This government was, over the years, adopted 4 Pelitty that if the farmers yell and scrWal hard enough, we'll throw them a crumb or two.
