This column is about the most
colorful character i ever met and
I ask you to follow me back to
shortly after the turn of the
century.
My Dad, being a thresher as
well as a farmer, had hired help
the year round, one man by the
year and two more when thresh-
ing started. He came home from
Vingliain one Saturday and had
our farm liana for the year with
him:, a typical Irishman, about
1.30 pounds, 5 ft. 6, 65 years of
age, and wore a chin whisker cut
square. He wasn't a good Irish,
man. The good Irish didn't come
from the 'Ulster counties, neither
did they want a picture of Queen
Victoria at the head of the bed
and King :William at the foot. The
good Irish were sniping at their
nglish Lords and, trying to get
the yoke of tyrant England off
their back: (Tommy Leek please
note).
Well, there wasn't anything
on the farm that man couldn't
do, and two things he wouldn't
on. He wouldn't drink water, and
he wouldn't go to Church,
Johnny Hawthorne was a wizard
and a world's wonder. He could
repair anything made of wood,
wagon tongues, plow handles, axe
handles, He could splice a rope,
and always kept the harness in
good shape. For seven years he
was my only barber. At the barn,
Johnny was as good as any vet..
If we were expecting young pigs
or a calf, he stayed at the stable,
always kept the passage filled
with hay, and a horse blanket, and
a buffalo robe made him his bed.
He had cures for all animal ail-
thents. He would take a look at a
sick cow and maybe decide she
had lost her "cud". Down to the
house he would go and get a
slice of fat pork. He would then
turn one of the stove lids over
and rub the soot into it. Then to
the barn where the poOr cow Would
have to choke it down. After he
had been with us three years the.
cows smartened up, as soon as
he opened the, stable door they
would all start chewing, evert
the calves.
