EXTRA TROUBLE TO MAKE
SELECTED-GRANULATE- FERTILIZER,
Because it's more effective, SHUR-GAIN Fertilizer is granulated after the
ingredients have been mixed and is not just a blend of granular
materials. As a result each granule contains all three plant food
elements in the right proportions.
Ordinary granular and blended fertilizers simply consist of a
mixture of ingredients, either in powder form or granules. Although
it's easier to make fertilizer that way it cannot be as effective in use
due to the separation of ingredients of different size and weight.
As every granule contains all the guaranteed plant food elements,
SHUR-CAIN Selected-Granulated Fertilizer remains completely bal-
anced throughout storing, shipping and spreading —resulting in
balanced feeding of plants from every granule; consistent, more even
application of the best possible fertilizer to give you maximum
yields and top returns from your fertilizer dollar.
As always it pays to get the finest fertilizer for your good earth—

More breeders are. using .the.

10114144;c ser‘iice for heat cattle.
Dave youni,; of CDA:s.14.Vestoeli
Division says the reason is thei
increasing value breeders place
on perfermance-tested animals
as a means to improve the
eiticieucy of their beef nerds.
cattle production is be-
a separate 44.4. import-
ant agricultural enterprise. in
111611 the income from the sale of
cattle and calves was KO mil-
lion, more than one-third of ail
income from livestock and liye-
stock products.
This sounds as. of the. beef pro-
ducer is doing all right.. glut Mr.
Young points out that if beef
production is to maintain its
major role it must have more
efficient meat producers to count-
er the rising costs of production..
. ROP has: proved tnat there .is
a big difference in the rates of
gain of beef animalS - a differ-
ence that cannot be Measured,
and compared except by perfor-,
mance testing.
Looking back over the 1956-
63 records, Mr. Young says it was
etablished under tests, that bull
calves outgain heifer ealves by
two-tends of a pound per day
i'com. birth to weaning • and by
two-thirds of a pound pet day
durin die feeding period.
About 20,000 calves came under
test during those years. Male
Ily no puzzle
calves numbered 9,490, The top
SAO of these, from 11 rate-of-gain
point of view, put on lb. more
Ow' in the weaning peripd than
did the bottom 3,00U bull calves.
'the difference. increased to lb.
per day iu the feeding period,
Getting back to the bail calves.
Mr. Young says: 'she 'weighted
average difference or taws
quarters of a pound betwen the
top and bottom male calves Uh
feed is equal to 126 lb. of beef
during the 168-day feeding period,
steer gaining this Much
more than its contemporaries in,
the feedlot generally does 4.o on
relatively less feed, and at to-
day's prices consequently returns
the feeder about $26.50 more than
the less efficient steer in the r.
bottom performing third.
The selection of both sires and,
dams front the top third within
the herd, or the elimination of
animals in the bottom third, will
increase returns to the producer,
says Mr. Young.
Perforniance testing in 196344
of. 227 herds and 7,199 calves rep
resented more than a one-third
increase compared with the prey
ions year.
Prairie Province farmers enter-
ed 200 of the 227 herds entered.
Hereford herds 'were most numer-
ous, followed by Aberdeen-Angus
and Shorthorn.
The Federal-Provincial HON,
for Beef Cattle program is a
"herd" or "home" test.. The per
formance of the calves is re
corded from birth to -weaning,
then over a 168 day feeding
period.
