ALL. WRONG
As though there had not, been
enough problems over the new
Canadian flag design, an Ottawa
report says that tens of thOus-
ands, of. Canadians are going to
end up owning a version of the
new banner that is the wrong
shape, is printed in the
wrong color, and has a wrong
maple leaf illustration,
In their eagerness to exploit
another segment of the Canadian
market, Japanese textile manu-
facturers have flooded the country
with .a flag that' while it purports
to he the official version was ste-
tinily in production before there
was an official version, The result
is that the maple leaf in the Japa-
nese product has 13 points inste,ed
of 11, with sharp serrations be-
tween the points instead of round-
ed valleys, In color, the official
flag uses the same tone of red as
in the Red Ensign, but the. Tam,
nese product has a "darker, tired-
blool hue." rinally, the Sap flag
does not have the proper over-all
dimensions, the leaf Is toe large,
and the red bars on each side are
ion narrow.
The errors in the inivilfted Pro-
duct are at least partly due to the
Japanese manufacturers' deter-
urination to he first in the mark-
et, They went into action as soon
as the Commons flag committee
reported its chosen design Can-
adian flag makers waited to see if
there would be changes, as there,
were. Actually the Japanese trn-
un-ts had been distributed across
the country some days befere the
final design received official ap-
proval. However, se the public
is not thoroughly To:miller with
the new national flag, the Jap-
anese version has been accepted
by many flag buyers, as its pro
ducers assumed it would be,
The Canadian Press states that
officials in the industry and trade
departments in Ottawa, as well as
iiI di an manufacturers, are con-
cerned with the Japanese invas-
ion of the flag mbrlret It will be
a considerable market. It is esti-
mated that 4,000,000 new Canad-
ian flags of all sizes will be pur-
chased this year and that up to
fen million will h, .-e been bought
hy the time of the 1007 Centen-
/l int Celebrations.
Aside from the discourtesy of
offering a faulty flag design, to
say the least, the Japanese are
displaying poor taste in attempt-
ing to jostle Canadian producers
out of the flag market, There is
also the economic, consideration
that Canadians should have the
employmen t inVo5eil in Produc-
ing the new national emblem.
