It it is operated on a road or. highway, the answer is yes. An official of the Ontario Department of Transport said many enquiries have been re- ceived this winter about the legal status of snowmobiles. The growth of interest apparently sterns from increased use of these vehicles especially in the northern parts of the province. He said a snowmobile is de- finitely a motor vehicle within the meaning of the Highway Traffic Act, when it is on a street, road or highway. This means that all the regu- lations applying to cars and motorcycles on roads or high- ways also apply co snowmobiles. - for example, they must have vehicle permits and licence plat, es, have proper headlights, tail- lights, and brakes, and be oper- ated by a driver who is at least 16 years old and has a driver's licence. For licensing purposes snow- mobiles are classified as follows: Passanger - carrying snowmo- biles with two skis at the front and individual tracks on each side at the rear are classified as "passenger vehicles". Those with tWo skis at the front and a single endless drive belt at the rear are classified as "motorcycles* Snow Mobiles equipped with track or delivery bodies are classified as "conimercial vehicles". Snow- mobiles which carry passengers for hire are Classified' buses". When snowmobiles are oper- ated in other places other that streets, roads and highways, the proviSions of the 'Highway Traf- fic Act are not applicable.
