The Cenionniol Commission has chosen the symbol
of tho Centennial of Confederation: eleven *qui•
lateral triangles arranged together into a symbolic
Maple Leaf representing the ten Provinces and the
Canadian North.

STYLIZED MAPLE LEAP
IS NOW CANADA'S
CENTENNIAL SYMBOL
Canada now has a Centennial
Symbol: a stylized maple leaf.
The design is composed Of
eleven equilateral triangles ar-
ranged to form a symbolic maple
leaf. Ten triangles represent
the provinces and one, the aPer,
repr esents the territories of
the Canadian North.
The design has been approved
by the Board of Directors of the
Centennial Commisson together
with the National Conference on
the Centennial of Confederation,
a large representative advisory
body composed of 60 Members
— 20 representing provincial
governments and 40 members at
large representing all Canadians.
During the past year the Com-
mission held a contest to find
such a symbol. Judges awarded
first Prize to Gilles Coutn, Mont
real, with second place going to
Heiner Hegeman, Point Claire,
Quebec, and third prize to Harry
Aslin of Montreal.
Under the terms of the c0111-
petition they will receive, re-
spectively, $2500, $1000 and MO.
The three eriz'n winning designs
are the property of the Centen-
nial Commission.
Designs of the contest winners
were not adopted because the
Commission considered that
while they were or special artis-
tic and graphic merit, they were
not entirely suitable for the many
uses envisaged. The designs tend-
ed to resemble commercial trade
marks well known In Canada.
A number of other entries re-
eeivrli honorable mention and
one in particulnr drew the atten-
tion of the ;blges. The Centen-
nial Commission asked the con-
testant to submit a more suitable
design to he ehosen by, the
COTTI.M1SS ion as the symbol for
the Centennial of Candler! Con-
federation.
re electing this design the
Coni:mission wanted a symbAl

The symbolic maple leaf,
used, together with the dates 1867
1967 and the words "Canada C011-
federation" wherever seen will be
a constant reminder or tne 100th
anniversary of Confederation of
Canada.
Policy of usage is now under
consideration and will be an
nounced in due course.
The symbol, registered wider
the Trade Marks Act, is also
copyrighted and cannot be used
without the permission of the
Centennial Commission. For
