dad would say, if these people can
live a lifetime on it you fellows
should get along for a couple of

Straw ticks, feather beds, mattres-

a mattress filled with corn

go to the barn to sleep. A

When we came in for breakfast

A few people still do not know
that when 15 years of age, i knew,
more about Steam Engines and
could manipulate them better
than any other living, per-
son. Two others deserve Inetigell.
Watt, who made the first one and
'Casey Jones. However Watt's
boiler was too big for his engine
and Casey wrecked his. Neither
one of these fellows had to push
their engine through snow: and
mud or set on a slippery gang-
way when the rear wheels had
to be put on a 2 it. log. They

Never short of steam, and never
blew a safety plug. Many a young
man, years ago tried to learn this
great profession, but where are
they today. borne are slinging
hash, some peddling milk, where
all that is required is the capac-
ity to hold great quantities of
coffee. Some are looking after
schools, some are poacheris,
others in the produce racket and
still other are clerks, butchers,
bankers, bakers, eta.
It took brains to be an engineer.
Brains, brawn and speed. I really
took pride in looking after these
ten ton monsters. Thundering
down the road at about 23/2 miles
an. hour. Nice girls would come
out to wave and they would get a
little toot on the whistle. One
engine I handled was almost
human, when a pretty girl appear-
with a nice smile the boiler pres-
sure went up a-bout ten pounds. At
16 years of age mine went up the
the same, maybe a bit higher.
Plenty of work, up in the morning
at five, grab the flue cleaner,
scratch and scrape 48 or 50, ten
ft. flues; file the saw and have
120 pounds of steam waiting for
the men to come. I did more hard.

You wouldn't wear your summer clothes
when the weather gets near freezin'. .
Winter driving is dangerous . visibility is low during winter storms;
stopping takes longer; and early darkness means more driving after dark.
TO AVOID WINTER ACCIDENTS: slow down ... keep your windshield free of ice and
snow ... follow at a safe distance and remember to leave one window open a little at all
times. If you have to stop in a hurry, pump your brakes, don't jam them and put your car
into a skid. (Power brakes need gentle pumping.)
