History Of St. David's
Church, Henfryn,
1882 - 1964
(By Mrs. Thomas Kerr and
Rev. H. L. Jennings)
In relating these historic facts
we pay tribute to the work of
the pioneers of Grey and Elms
Townships, many whose names
are forgotten. The church was
the central part of pioneer life.
This church is situated on Lot 8;
and lot 9 east beside the church.
From Brussels you travel east
on County Road No. 16 and turn
to the North at a sign that in-
forms you that Henfryn is .06
miles,
The late• Archbishop David
Williams told me that the name
Henfryn meant "Old Hill" and
the church was named after the
Welsh Saint David. The property
was purchased from a Welshman
Edirin, Clark Kearns Davies,
the registry date, March 10th,
1882. The pine from Mr. Davies'
saw mill near by was used for
the floors, doors, and pews. The
bricks came from the brick-
yard across the road from the
mill. David Edgar helped haul
sand, and Andrew Laidlaw of
Lot 3, Concession 1' helped haul
stone . One day about 2 p.m. he
had a load at the building site
when darkness fell. His faithful
team took him home, not over
a highway, but east of the church
to the river, along the river, and
over the trail to some. This "dark.
day" was caused 'by the groat
Chicago fire in the 'fall of 1880.
The 10th Concession was fast a
trail • through the bush at this
time. James Longmire, an old-
-country earpenter made the
TieWS.
The Reverend O. J. A. Batstone
was the first incumbent. He also
served In Leamington, Kingsville,
and Colchester. Mr. Cluff, a
student, later Canon Muff,
'preached in the summer of 1882.
from 11884 till 1887 the records
tell of students Robinson and 14.
'Griffin, then Rev. B. 'Eddlestien,
Rev. W. G. Ecclestone, and Rev.
E. M Yates, Rev. Et Lee 1802-03,
Rev. J. F. Parke, Mr. Hooper,
Student 1895. The church was
consecrated by Bishop Baldwin,
'June 5th, 1894. Rev. S. R. Asbury
1896-97, Rev. T. G. Wright 1699,
Rev. T. H. Farr, 1899-1901.
The church was closed from
1901 until July 24th, 1905.
