The congregation intoning a Psalm of David spoke with tongues but a few generations removed from their formatters who had skidded these timbers and carted these bricks along the muddy trails with oxen. When, on. St. Andrew's 145th I anniversary, I was privileged to join my voice with the choir to invoke God's blessing upon the good work which the pioneer's had started almost a century and a half ago, I felt a close affinity with those who slept in the churchyard hard by. Each time I look southward from my living room window and see the silver spire of 'St. An- drew's which pointed the early settlers heavenward I am re- minded that, through hardship and adv, ersity, they have laid the foundations upon which we build to-day, and my heart overflows TIRE SALE Tooling Trellis Safely dark et Ian. THE BIRTH OF ECARBORcVill By B, $1001 (Continued from last week) For the next seventy years a a succession of vigorous leaders of the farmers ,of. Scarborough met in Council in a grey weather-. ed building at Woburn, the old Township Hain which stood at the meeting of the Markham and Danforth Roads. The township continued to thrive , as a purely rural community of i between 3,700 and 5,000 people. But before the end of this period signs of change began to appear. An electric railway line was built along the Kingston Road, and more people travelled to and from the growing city of Toronto on the trolley cars.in 1914 the young men went over- seas to fight for king and country in the First World War. When they came back they fauna hydro electric wires being strung everywhere along the roads of the Township and the days of oil lamps fast di& appearing. The Township was beginning to build its first . Water works at the toot of Ken. nedy Road, and its water mains were replacing wells' along the streets near the city. More and more people were pouring out into the open spaces of south- ern Searborpugh along the Kingston Road and building homes, from which they travel- led daily to Toronto. New public schools had to be built, and in 1922 the first Collegiate In- stitute. By 1931 Scarborough's population had grown to 20,682. Then came the great businests depression of the thirties and the Second 'World Ware to blight the hopes and plans of hosts of home makers, and the Town- ship almost ceased to grow. But with the close of the war in 1915 we opened a new and wonderful chapter in the story of Scarborough which is stlll barely begun. During the past nineteen years in our Town- ship has exploded into a vast community of over 250,000 citi- zens. and has been transformed into one of the great industrial and commercial centres of Can.. ada, enriched by' the skills gof men of many nations. To-day in our modern and attractive fact- OrieS we are 'sharing in the creative work of a great country destined to become greater yet And in new schools and churches parks, libraries and homes, we are striving to build still better, happier citizens, loyal to those high principles which are our hOritage from the pioneers or old. It was like coming home when settled in a pew at. St, Andrew's 1.7hureh for the first time.
