Or a Rambling Correspondent : Having had occasion to tined over a large portion of Bruce county, calling at a number of villages and towns, we though we might give you a few items which way be of interest to some of your readers, who feel an interest in the "weal and wee" of our sister county. One of the first conclusions we came to was, the farmers hare had a better time this year thee they Y have had for the last two or three years. They went to have a ki"n:erbf a satisfied look, with the excepting of some poor fellows who have had a hard row of it, those who are al- ways in the back ground, un hatttt: what their ob!bCee are. From lug v.b learned the crops have been with the exception of spring w eat, which was a great failure. The pes bug (a pest our Huron farmers n no explanation about) is yet is stranger to the greater part of Bruce. The a results accruingfrum tbispnrperi- ty is very favorable to collectors. Those who have had occasion to do a little in this line during the last few years pro- bably can endorse the experience of a fellew sufferer. If the debtor saw the than he owed coining he generally took occasion to step into some place where he had no particular buaiaess; or, • if his position was that he had to meet him, it was with flushed face and • sorrowful story. Now and then the dunner would conte across a than who would revive his drooping spirits by telling hint he would send some money in a few weeks; but their weeks generally turned into months. But new we are glad to say good days have drowned again, and we believe better times are coming. Prices for grain slid produce keep apace with; Goderich prices. A large quantity u wheat has been sown this fall which looks exceedingly well The merchants and mechanics throughout the county are doing a very fair business. Some places, such as Tiverton would be much brisker were they favored with railroad facilities, (better than Goderich has). Tiverton is surrounded by a very fine country, and an excellent class of farm- ers. The vicinity north of Bervie is infested with bears, which are supposed to have been driven from northern swamps by recent fires; one was seen last Wednesday, Oct. 13th, by two young sten who were coot hunting. They came within about a rod of a huge one, who sat up and looked at them as if he was "monarch of all he surveyed." The young men being unarmed, beat a hasty retreat. but they were soon joined by $ company who were armed with weapons such as forks, axes and guns, your hum- ble servant being one of the number and boldly carried a fork. We were all anxious to win laurels, 'and be able to relate to our great grand children, "We killed a bear.' But we were disappoint- ed when we reached the place where our guides had encountered "old Bruin," to find the spot was bare where the bear had been, and after n fruitless search; we struck off in Indian file for home, arith the poor satisfaction of saying we had a bear hunt. .:<. • 4ui - (I1bO1 t. - Wezarsi. --Mr. Jus. The Stontiard's Bombay correspondent, telegraphing this morning, says:—The following intelligence has been received here with regard to the disaster at Naini Tal:—Rain began falling heavily on the evening of Friday last. It kept pouring steadily in an uninterrupted flow tmtil Saturday afternoon, when the gauge showed a fall of five iachesin forty hours. The effect of such an enormous nags of water pouring down the confined settle- ment, which is siniply • basin formed by the circle of hills, can be imagined. All the roads were .cut to pieoes. In the forenoon of Saturday it was rumoured that the Victoria Hotel was iu • danger- ous state.' The lendalip occured at the spur be- hind the hotel, and resulted in the' col- lapse of theupper line, together with the outhouses and a portion of the back pre- mises. The alarm was given to the • visi- tors staying in the hotel, who took shel- ter elsewhere. The main buil, how- ts ever, remains standing unim Al- though the landslip had n slight, about thirty natives connected with the hotel and one European child were bur- ied in the ruins Commissioner Taylor, with the police and a band of labourers, was quickly on the spot, and were joined by a working party from the military depot under the command, of Captain B Mission Banking. BANK OF MONTREAL About half -pad one o'clock Naini Tal was startled by a sudden and sullen roar louder than a simultaneous crash of heavy guns. A tumbling followed, and then an ominous silence. Vast clouds of dust rose, enveloping in a dense shroud large tracts of ground. From the hotel outwards to the assembl rooms and the lake the whole place shook as though an earthqake had oocnrred. The lake rose in a moment far above its usual height and swept in a massive way towards the weir. , All was still for a moment, and then came down in one fell swoop an enormous mass of land, bury- ing the hotel and the gallant band be- hind it, covering the roads, gardens, and shops, together with the assembly rooms and all the other buildings in the place. Assistant Commissary Taylor and sev- eral Local police and labourers at once rendered assistance and sent for the military, who came directly under the command of Captain Balderston. Till 1:30 the work of extricating the dead and wounded had proceeded, when sudden- ly the whole precipitous cliff overhang- ing them fell with a tremendous roar, burying at once the -hotel, 11 a military party, the assembly rooms, library, or- derly room, the road and garden m the Centre Station. Almost every soul in the building and the immediate vicinity was entombed. The piece shook me if an earthquake had happened, and the wa- ter of the lake were driven inan immen- se wave towards the men on the opposite shore. A Daily Newel Lahore correspondent says Onlouuel Taylor, R L Oosseltieg Engineer, and lieutenant ilebiasoa, ori the 3IIrd Regiment, are also among those killed at Nam Tut CAPITAL. - •1.1,110.01e.
