NARROW GAUGE BONUS.
A ap.r*si Iseettag .I r.r ilewtek Connell
tvevatsread• the Granting of $111,8110.
On' haturiay Ia rthe Reeve was re-
quested by the Directors of the T. G. d
B. R. R. to call a special tweeting ..f the
Howick Council in order to present a by-
law to the ratepayers ranting a'.1 to the
railroad company to widen the gauge.
On Tuesday afternoon the councillors
were called together in lin. Days' ho-
tel in this village, and were met by
Messrs. Wragge and Beatty, officer of
the Company, accompanied by the Chief
Engineer of the Grand Trunk Company)',
who was on a tour of inep<_tion over the
Narrow Gauge road.
Mr. Beatty stated to the Council that
arrangements had been concluded with
Mr. Hickson, Oeuvre' Manager of the
Gland Trunk, and the contract sent to
England to confirmation. He then pr'"-
ceeded to read a copy of the contract, a
lengthy document, after which he asked
the Council to subunit the by-law pre-
sented same time ago with the figures al-
tered w that the amount asked for
would read $16,000, and such other
changes made in the provisions of the
by-law as were necessary. He explained
that according to the terms got from the
G. T. K, steel rails would be .laid along
the whole western branch and yet unity
three-quarters the ainount originally
asked from the municipalities be re-
quired.
The Reeve invited the council and
ratepayers present to discuss the subject,
when a long and earnest debate ensued
which drew out the opinion that a $16,- .
000 bonus would not carry at the polls,
genie of the councillors contending that
it would be a difficult matter to puss
even a $10,000 by-law. In answer to a
remark by a gentleman present that the
bonus previously granted to the road hall
no been a paying investment for the
municipality. Councillor Weir, ex -
Reeve Perkins and Henry Perking Esq.,
advanced some strong arguments show-
ing that Howick had received a great
lift towards civilization and prosperity
by the advent of the line. Councillors
Cook. Johnston and Jaques explained
that they were satisfied that the north-
east, east and south-east parts of the
township would oppose the granting of a
bonus as they were supplied with rail-
road facilities by the Great Western, and
advised the representatives to reduce the
amount of bonus caked to $10,000 or
$12,000 in order to make the by-law
successful. Mr. Beatty was not author-
ized to except so low a figure as this.
He had expected at (east $15,000 from
Howick as its share of the $300,000 re-
quired to widen the gauge. If other
municipalities insisted on such a reduc-
tion as this from the sum asked of them
