Now Mr. and Mrs. John Doe go and see the Stampede, but when you return tell the truth. I've heard so many at gatherings say you should have been with me last year; took in the Stases-, pede, you know; Calgary. It's' hard to admit you drove 2000 miles, hilt you will be a bigger Man if you admit you were a shelter; you paid double for sou, Wild cow milking is simple. Lariat around the saddle horn, the other around.the cow's horns, a "tug of war. The rider has a bottle the size of a big thimble. Three squirts add• she is milked. Some places they brand. Heat the iron, catch the beast, and burn the brand into the flesh. Cattle bawling, the smell 0f burning hide, hair and flesh. Boy, it's so stimulating. There may be 20* competitors, in. each event. I have mentioned the main ones. The best show of all is held down town, starting early. Every, merchant trys to get entertain- ments. Singers, dancers, yodel- aers all over the streets. Free pancakes, hut not grandma's kind. These are 'the the size of a silver dollar, only not as thick. I admit it is colorful- at stampede time. Everyone dresses for the occasion. Wide hats, cowboy, boots, silk shirts. You will want to see Miss Calgary, the Stam- pede Queen. Do you know who she is? She is the girl who sells the most tickets. It's considered quite an honor, so these girls go to smaller towns, organize sales through the Rotarians, Legions, etc. Of course they get a com- mission. 'The plainest girl can win if she is the best salesman. If you are mayor of your vilage, or an editor, you will be given a. white hat. The press will be there, also the photographers. You will be expected to praise western hospitality. The hat is worth (in 1956) $1.71, yep, one' doillar plus 71 cents. The evening show down town is good if you can protect your- self. The back alleys are full of fights, drunken cowboys, bottle throwing, blank cartridge etc. The parade is good. Some good horses but not as good as you see here. 'The trimmings axe beautiful. A $50 horse and a $1000 saddle. The Indians steal the show. (continued from last issue) Calf roping is real sport. .41. rider stands with rope coiled. The calk is given a prod or jolt and coliieSi put half mad with fear. Then. brave cowboy throws the lariat about the fourth jump. Ile puts Ow. rope over the neck, a half hitch to the saddle horn and the cow pony stops. The calf, goes Your,. five, or six feet in the air turns a double somersault, comes down. It doesn't matter it it has a broken neck or legs if the cowboy can lie three legs and hold up his hand for the. applause. oe.s i Used Car B,U.Y S 1963 ;Meteor Sedan 8 OA 1962 Chrysler Windsor 4. door hardtop, power steering power brakes 1961 Meteor ,Rideau 500 Sedan 8 cyl. auto. radio 1959 Pontiac Sedan 6 cyl. 1961 Ford Pick-up with long box 1957 Ford.
