,EARLY PLANTING PRODUCER
MATURE, HIGH YIELDS
OF CORN
Corn should be planted at
least prior to May 23rd, with
additional benefits of better
maturity and yield if planted
prior to May 10th.
According to Dr. E. E. Gamble,
Crop Science Deparinent, Ontario
Agriculture College, Guelph, frost
may Mt early plantings of corn
but it does` not have a Significant
effect on the final yield of the
crop. This is particularly so if ,the
Trost, comes at the earliest stages
of growth.
Corn frozen to the ground after

it is dead and will' not mature
further. The reedit is Immature
corn with lower yield and qual-
ity. To overcome this, plant early
and escape fall frost; or use a
hybrid requiring fewer heat wilts
which will reach maturity before
tall frost, suggests Dr. Gamble. I
Tests have shown that an early I
corn nlanting produces a higher
emergence or, plants thhn did
later planting dates.
itt the tests, five commercial
hybrids were planted at seven
weekly intervals starting May 2nd
and c btling June 13th. Yields rang-
er from a high of 91 bushels per,
planting. A corresponding differ-
ence in ear moisture at harvest
was evident — 27% with early
planting and 51.6% with the
late planting.
Dr. Gamble adviaeis that
although all Corn seed on the
market is treated 'with fungicide
to control seedling diseases, it is
