New Legion Building
A landmark of the village or
Brussels disappeared thili
week. The old bell tower, with
the bell, that for many years has
warned residents that its time'
they were up and at work; that
it was time for their meals; or to
get ready for church on Sunday,
and before the recent days of a
fire siren, clanged out a fright-
ening message: of tire or disaster,
has been taken down. However
the hell has not been thrown on
the scrap heap. It is intended to
install it on the firehall, so we '
who have grown so acustomed
to its sound will again hear its
familiar ringing.
It proved quite a task to re-
move the bell from the old
tower. which was accomplished
with a crane, Pulling down the
tower was easy once the hell
was safely removed. The bell •
had the date 1885 inscribed on
which was, presumably the
year it was manufactured. Its
it, which was, presumably, the
where between a half and one
ton. The date of its erection
here could not be ascertained.
The structure was removed
from the old Town Hall pro-
perty which is now owned by
the Brussels Branch of the,
Royal Canadian Legion. Work
is to commence there immed-
iately on a new Legion Hall.
The building is to be of split
level design, approximately
93'x11.' and will house a self-
container) auditorium.
