FARMING IMPRACTICAL
WITHOUT PESTICIDES
Crops destroyed in the fields
. . Insufficient food produc-
tion to meet a continually grow-
ing demand . .
Fruits and vegetables miss-
ing from the tables of all but
the wealthy . „
Canadians. accustomed to an
abundance of agricultural pro-
ducts, might find it diilicult to
envisage life under these condi-
tions.
The fact that tkey enjoy a
plentiful supply of load is in
large measure due to modern
chemistry which has played an
essential role in boosting • the
natioWs food supply.
One of the out-standing con-
tributions of the chemical. in-
dustry has been the production
of effective chemicals fur pest
control, observes K. Williams,
of Canada Department of Agri-
cUlture's . research station at
Surnmerland, B.L*4
Pest control has been one of
the major factors in the dra-
matic increase. in agricultural
production during the past half
century. he points out. The
many advances in agricultural
science would be nullified if
man alloy, ed pests to consume
his crops.
And tnen with the wide-
spread use of the best control
practices available today, it is
estimated that pests destroy
about one-quarter of North
America's food supply.
It is impossible to estimate
what would happen if the use
of pesticides was abandoned,"
Mr. Williams says. "There is
no doubt, however, that fruits
and vegetables would be in
such short supply as to be be-
yond. the reach of all but the
wealthy."
Shortages would similarly
affect prices of all other agri-
cultural aroducts, he adds.
Although biological control
is effective for only a • few
.pLnts at the moment, research
on this important aspect • is.
being pressed in many areas of
-the world.
.• Meantime, however, pesti-
cides remain the chief wea-
pons.
While many pesticides are
toxic to humuns and. animals,
they are not hazardous. ,When
used according to directions. It
is the misuse of the chemicals
that must he. guarded against.
Noting the recent publicity
given to pesticides, Mr. Wil-
liams says that it served a
'useful purpose in warning the
public of the risks involved in
indiscritninate use of toxic
chemicals. But the publicity
has not always stressed the
benefits obtained from t h e
pesticides.
"With over one-half of the
world's population existing . on.
a semi-starvation diet, we. need
the best weapons available Jo
keep 'crop 'tosses • to a mini-
mum," he concludes.
